I would say they are just the top of the line. I've used them more than once, and I was very pleased.

The funny thing is that I have called them twice over a 10 year span and both times the same technician came out. I thought that was really special. I can't remember his name, maybe his name is Josh. I would recognize it if I saw it.

Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for garage door contractors that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Precision Door Services of the Bay Area, the key to achieving and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction is simple: take a professional, detail-oriented approach to every job, regardless of its size. “We’re all about quality, and we prove that with everything we do,” says President Pat Prendergast. “From showing up to jobsites in marked trucks to calling our customers before we arrive so they aren’t left waiting, our goal is to provide a positive garage door experience every time.”

Precision Door Services of the Bay Area has been installing and repairing garage doors for residential clients throughout Santa Clara County and the surrounding areas since 2001. The family-owned and operated company offers a large selection of garage doors for sale (including carriage house and custom wood styles), and it provides same-day repair services for the convenience of its customers.

Unlike garage door contractors that cast a wide net with their services in an effort to maximize their workload volume, Precision Door Services of the Bay Area focuses solely on installing and servicing residential garage doors, which Mr. Prendergast says is important for ensuring high levels of quality. “Since we don’t work on things like commercial doors, sliding doors or front doors, we’re able to put all our efforts into making sure our residential garage door products and services are top-notch. Our customers know that when they hire us, they’re going to get a quality job at a fair price.”

Another distinguishing feature of Precision Door Services of the Bay Area is its 24/7 phone system, which is designed to ensure its customers speak to a live person no matter when they call. “We understand that some garage door problems can’t wait for a call back, so we make sure our customers can reach a qualified person as soon as they need help,” says Mr. Prendergast. “They know they’ll never get an answering machine, and they really appreciate that.”

Industry Info

Most people don’t even think about the noises their garage doors make. However, if you have a living space above your garage, neighbors in close proximity or varied sleep schedules within your household, you’re likely to discover just how disturbing loud garage door noises can be.

If your garage door is noisy or lets in sound pollution from the outside, there are a few things you can do to restore the peace. First, invest in an insulated garage door. “Insulated doors are much quieter,” says Pat Prendergast, president of Precision Door Services of the Bay Area in Fremont. “That’s important if your garage is attached to your home or you have neighbors who live close to your garage and might be disturbed by a loud door.”

Here are some other actions you can take to make your garage door less noisy:

  • Look for loose bolts and screws and tighten them so they’re snug (be careful not to over-tighten). This will stop the door from rattling when it opens and closes.
  • Replace worn or damaged hinges—they can make the whole door loose and cause vibrations, rattling, and grinding noises when you open or close it.
  • Lubricate the track, springs, rollers, chains and other moving parts of your garage door. Keeping these areas lubricated will cut down on noisy vibrations and keep the moving parts functioning more smoothly. This should be done every six months, or when you notice your garage door getting louder.
  • Swap metal rollers with nylon or plastic ones. “Nylon rollers are much quieter than plastic rollers,” says Mr. Prendergast. “They’re also more durable, so they’ll last longer.”
  • Garage door silencers and soundproofing kits are also available. These kits stop vibrations from traveling through the garage roof to the rooms above.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How quickly can you come to my house and fix my door?

A: We can usually get to you the same day if you call before 5pm. We understand that a broken or malfunctioning garage door can be a big problem, so we always try to get to our customers as soon as possible.

Q: How much will it cost to repair my garage door?

A: It depends on a lot of factors, so we prefer to look at the problem before we give an estimate so we know exactly what we’re dealing with. Our estimates include the full installation cost, so there are no hidden fees, and we also include an inspection of the garage door. We provide free estimates for new garage doors. For repairs, one of our technicians will give you an estimate before any work begins.

Q: What door brands do you service and install?

A: We service all major brands of garage doors and garage door openers. We install Amarr, Entrematic, Chamberlain, Clopay, Home Depot, Liftmaster, Marantec, Raynor, Sears, Stanley and Genie doors.

Q: Why should I consider an insulated garage door?

A: Insulated garage doors are much quieter than traditional doors, which is important if there’s a bedroom above your garage or if you have neighbors who live close by and might be disturbed by loud noises.

Q: Do garage door rollers really make a difference?

A: Yes. There are two types of garage door rollers: nylon and plastic. Nylon rollers are usually white, and they’re quieter and more durable than plastic rollers, which tend to be black.

Amie Prendergast: Relational Rewards

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Program Reporter

HAYWARD — Following a career in the technology sector, Amie Prendergast switched gears to become a stay-at-home mom. Years later, when her husband, Pat, expressed a desire to switch from banking to a more service-oriented line of work, she knew exactly how he felt. “In my prior career, I was a product manager for a software company, and Pat was in investment banking, so neither of us had ever worked in a customer service-oriented business setting,” she explains. “We both wanted to get involved in a profession where we could serve customers directly, so we started looking for a business to purchase. When we came across Precision Garage Door Services of the Bay Area, it fit the bill. Not only was it a customer service-based business, it was locally owned as well. Plus, just about everyone has a garage door, so we saw a lot of opportunity.”

Today, Amie says her favorite part of her job is interacting with Precision Garage Door’s staff and customers. “We have a good group of employees, and we really enjoy working with them. Of course, we also like talking with and getting to know our customers, and it’s very rewarding to receive positive feedback.”

A resident of the East Bay, Amie expresses her appreciation for the diverse character of the Bay Area landscape. “I like the fact that the Bay Area has major cosmopolitan areas like San Francisco, but also lots of places where you can enjoy the outdoors and get in touch with nature,” she says. “I also like being close to the ocean. It’s just a beautiful place to live.”

Outside of work, Amie says her primary pursuit is spending time with her family, including Pat and their three daughters, Madlynn, Alison, and Charlotte. Additionally, she likes to stay healthy with activities like working out and cooking.

In her life and career, Amie emphasizes the importance of relationships. “It’s all about maintaining good relationships with people, both in your personal life and in business,” she explains. “In either case, good relationships are based on honesty and trust, so that’s something we both practice at our company and strive to instill in our children.”

When asked the first thing she’d do if she were to retire tomorrow, Amie says she’d see the world. “I’d definitely travel more, starting in Europe. We’ve actually been there before, but I’ve wanted to go back ever since.”

  • How to Fix a Common Garage Door Issue

HAYWARD — A common scenario experienced by homeowners is a garage door that’s stuck in the open position, which is usually accompanied by a blinking overhead light and clicking sound. If you experience this, you may think you need to call a professional. However, in most cases, this issue stems from a problem with the safety sensors, which is something you can usually solve yourself.

Situated at about ankle height on either side of the door, the safety sensors protect against door-related injury and damage. Either sensor has an “eye,” which enables it to transmit a signal to the other. In order for the door to function properly, these two eyes need to be in alignment. If communication between them is interrupted, the garage door won’t close.

There are a couple things that can cause the safety sensors to malfunction. One is if something is blocking the transmission between the two eyes. Many times, the cause is obvious; however, even something as insignificant as a spider web can interrupt the signal, so be sure to look closely when checking for obstructions.

The other possibility is that the sensor eyes are out of contact with each other. Either sensor has a green light; if the light is solid, you know the sensors are in alignment. If the light is blinking (and there are no obstructions), try readjusting one or both sensors until the light is solid on both sides.

Expert video tip

Video: A Common Cause of Garage Door Problems

Complete Video Transcription:

HAYWARD — Host, Sarah Rutan: If your garage door won’t open or close, you might think there’s a major malfunction, but in many cases, the solution is quite simple. Today we’re in Fremont with Diamond Certified Expert Contributors Pat and Amie Prendergast to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Pat Prendergast: Today we want to give you a tip on how to potentially fix your own garage door problem, which may be just the censor eyes, which you can line up yourself. If your door won’t go down, then it’s possible that it’s just the sensor eyes and you can fix it yourself. If your door won’t go up, you probably need a professional to come out and help you fix your door.

But you can see here there’s a green light and it’s solid, and if they’re both solid on either side, that means the two lights are meeting each other and it’s safe for the door to go down. Often people think that both lights have to be green, that’s not true. They both have to be solid, generally, depending upon the opener and the sensor eyes used.

So if something’s in the way, you can see that the light will go out, because it thinks that there is something in the way and therefore the door should not go down as a safety precaution. As I take my hand away, you can see the solid green light comes off. Lots of things can cause the safety eyes to not see each other. Sometimes people will inadvertently hit them, and therefore they won’t be lined up.

Sometimes there’s cobwebs or dirt that grows over time so it thinks that there’s something in the way, or sometimes there actually is something in the way, as you can see when I put this in the way of the sensor eye it turns off.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Amie Prendergast: Another way to check to see if it’s your sensor eyes that are the issue is to try closing your garage door. If the light is blinking and it’s making a clicking noise, it most likely is your sensor eyes. So you can save yourself some time and money by checking your sensor eyes before calling us.
