Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for home theater and automation companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Lavish Theaters, the key to achieving and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction is simple: provide products and services that are as functional as they are sophisticated. “Our goal is to make technology work for our customers,” says owner Ryan Lyeth. “We create state-of-the-art systems that actually make our clients’ lives easier, more comfortable and more enjoyable.

Lavish Theaters has been providing electronic integration services for residential and commercial clients in Sonoma, Napa, Lake, Mendocino, Marin, and San Francisco Counties since 1999. The company primarily focuses on designing and building home theaters, hi-fi stereo systems, and security and video surveillance systems for homes and businesses, but it also has the capabilities to install motorized window shades, automated lighting control systems and more.

Unlike less experienced home automation companies that have to limit their services because they lack the proper training or equipment, Lavish Theaters utilizes its wide-ranging skills to handle every aspect of its customers’ projects. “We’re truly a one-stop shop,” affirms Mr. Lyeth. “Our customers don’t have to purchase products independently or hire different companies to handle design and installation. We design and install all our systems, and we also provide comprehensive service and support after the fact.”

Another distinguishing attribute of Lavish Theaters is its performance-focused approach to every aspect of its work. “A lot of home theater companies are so focused on the automation aspect that they overlook product quality,” explains Mr. Lyeth. “In contrast, we place equal emphasis on performance and install top-of-the-line products in order to provide the best possible experiences.”

Industry Info

While home automation is one of the fastest growing trends in modern technology, many people still have a limited knowledge as to what the “smart home” craze is all about. Fundamentally, home automation integrates all of a home’s electronic systems—from lighting and HVAC to security and audio/video—and gives the homeowner control of each from a single source (computer, smartphone, iPad). It may sound like an exercise in high-tech vanity to some, but home automation is far more than gadgetry for gadgetry’s sake.

In addition to improved functionality, automation significantly increases the convenience of life at home. By allowing homeowners to control various systems from a single remote source, automation makes maintaining a home as simple as pressing a button. Due to its characteristic ease, home automation can be particularly beneficial for elderly or disabled people who might otherwise require caregivers or institutional care.

Home automation can also improve safety by integrating control of your home security system, including door locks, burglar alarms and security cameras. In addition to letting you lock or unlock doors remotely (as well as check on your property while you’re out of town), automation can link your home security alarm to your smartphone and immediately alert you of an unexpected entry.

You can also improve your energy efficiency through home automation. Whether dimming the lights throughout your house, maintaining indoor temperatures or simultaneously adjusting several window shades, automation enables you to regulate your home’s total energy output from a single source, resulting in more efficient operation.

According to Ryan Lyeth, owner of Lavish Theaters in Hillsborough, the principal goal of home automation is to create an improved lifestyle for homeowners. “It’s not just the fact that you can control your window shades from your iPad; it’s about maximizing the functionality, safety and comfort of your home, as well as the quality of your life,” he says. “You don’t have to be a home systems expert or an iPad fanatic to enjoy the benefits of automation—it’s simple and easy.”

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Craig Allison

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE

Craig Allison: High Fidelity

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

HEALDSBURG — Upon purchasing his first stereo system in 1966, a young Craig Allison found himself immersed in a scintillating new world of sound that would prove to be a seminal influence throughout his formative years. What he didn’t realize, however, is that his musical fixation would one day lead to a professional career. “I’ve always had a deep interest in music,” he says. “For a certain amount of time, hi-fi was my serious hobby, but that all changed in 1983 when I started working at Catania Sound, a high-end audio store of which I’d previously been a customer. Since then, I’ve successfully operated four high-end audio shops in the Sonoma County area.”

Today, as the hi-fi expert at Lavish Theaters, Craig still enjoys improving people’s lives through better listening. “Hi-fi is not selling refrigerators—while we’re ostensibly selling hard goods, what the customer gets out of it is a genuine metaphysical experience,” he explains. “The simple fact is, with today’s fast-paced, over-stimulating lifestyle, listening to high-quality, low-distortion music is one of the few non-pharmaceutical ways to relax the mind.”

Originally from Manhattan, New York (he jokingly likens his adolescence to “West Side Story”), Craig migrated to the Bay Area in 1974 and today resides in Windsor with his wife, Patricia. After four decades in the Bay Area, he says he appreciates the distinctive aura that characterizes the region. “There’s a unique level of consciousness to be found in the Bay Area, and part of that comes from being tapped into such a tremendous legacy of music history.”

Besides living in an area steeped in musical heritage, Craig has his own roots in the professional music scene. “I spent three decades as the lead vocalist for a rhythm and blues outfit,” he explains. “While attending college, in order to earn credit for an American Music History class, a few classmates and I put together a group and did some tunes. Thirty years later, the Bourgeois Blues Band had opened for the likes of John Lee Hooker, Ray Charles, Etta James, Bo Diddley and Charlie Musselwhite.”

While now retired from stage performance, Craig continues to nurture his passion for music by playing recreationally. “Actually, I was recently asked to play with some people, so I’m kind of excited to keep that connection,” he says. In addition to enjoying music, Craig likes cooking (a talent he developed during his former career in food service); spending time with his wife; and playing with their three dogs, Keith (named after Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards), Cookie and Maury.

When asked about a personal philosophy, Craig says music is just as much a gift to be shared as something to individually enjoy. “I don’t believe we’re on this earth for any other reason than to love and be loved. In my case, helping others enhance and deepen their enjoyment of music is the best way to do that on a broad scale.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: What’s your favorite band?
A: The Rolling Stones.

Q: If you could put together a supergroup, who would be in the band?
A: Definitely Keith Richards on guitar. Just for fun, I’ll say Keith Moon on drums. Bass has to be Willie Dixon. Tommy Flanagan on keyboards, and for vocals, let’s throw Howlin’ Wolf in there.

Q: If you were going to sing karaoke, what song would you choose?
A: “Goodnight, Irene.” It’s one of the oldest public domain folk songs, originally recorded by Lead Belly.

Q: What’s the best gift you’ve ever received?
A: My first dog, Mick.

Q: What was your first concert?
A: Soft Machine, the Chambers Brothers, Janis Joplin with Big Brother and the Holding Company, and Jimi Hendrix at the Singer Bowl in New York, 1967.

  • The Resurgence of Vinyl LPs

HEALDSBURG — Today, an increasing number of people are returning to a format of music listening that’s more than 50 years old: vinyl LPs. In an era where digital music is readily available, what could account for this movement toward a seemingly antiquated medium?

Looking closer, it’s no surprise why people are rekindling their love for LPs. In addition to the palpable enjoyment of holding a record in one’s hands, the appeal of vinyl is largely in its sound. Compared to baseline digital audio formats such as MP3, vinyl records offer a clean, organic sound, representing a significant difference for those who truly want to listen to their music. Here’s a good way to think about it: moving from low-fidelity formats like MP3 to the clean, high-fidelity audio that vinyl offers is akin to moving from a diet of processed foods to one of fresh, organic cuisine.

When it comes to vinyl, it’s important to understand that you get out of it what you put into it. Compared to digital formats, LP listening is a complicated affair that involves various working parts, interconnected components and even ongoing maintenance. One of the most crucial components for enjoying vinyl is the turntable: as the first link in the chain of a stereo system, it generates the raw information that enters the receiver and leaves the speakers. A common misconception is that speakers are the most important part of a stereo system, when in reality, speakers only do what they’re told.

There’s nothing like the relationship you have with your records, from holding them to cleaning them to the simple act of dropping the needle into the groove. In an age of detachment, LPs enable you to become re-involved with your music on multiple levels, which can enhance your listening enjoyment and enrich your life.

Video: The Revival of Vinyl Records

Complete Video Transcription:

HEALDSBURG — Host, Sarah Rutan: There is a renewed interest in vinyl records and today we’re in Healdsburg with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Craig Allison of Lavish Theaters to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Craig Allison: Today people are enjoying the source of music that we all began with over 50 years ago, and you probably know what I’m talking about. I’m talking about vinyl LPs, or what we simply used to call records.

Now, today everything from the numbers to the people who I talk to every day, we find there is an enormous resurgence in the interest in vinyl LPs. And the first thing we want to tell you today about that is that if you love vinyl, if you have a good collection, the most important part of your stereo system is actually your turntable, the very first link in the chain that generates all the information for everything else. So, that’s something that a lot of people don’t understand. They think it’s all up to the speaker. The speaker only does what it’s told.

Now, the reason people love vinyl is because of the sound. The sound is organic compared to baseline digital, such as MP3s that people bring on for background music. While they’ll never actually sit and listen to that, but as soon as they put on a record, it just says, oh, yeah, let’s sit down, let’s get into this. And it’s a factor that I’ve observed because I’ve been doing this for over three decades.

There’s nothing like the relationship you have with your records. You get to hold them. You get to clean them. You get to cherish them. And you get to handle your turntable. So, as this is also in an era of detachment, you’re getting re-involved with your music on every single level.
