In addition to its general maintenance and repair services (all of which are backed with a 12-year/12,000-mile warranty), the family-owned and operated company sells pre-owned European cars and accepts vehicle consignments/trade-ins.

Unlike less experienced auto repair shops that take a hands-off approach to communicating with their customers, Import Motors offers full disclosure to every person who visits its shop. “A lot of Mercedes, BMW and Audi owners are detail-oriented and want thorough explanations of their car problems,” says Mr. Mast. “We always explain our work and compare old parts to replacement parts so our customers can be aware of how we fixed their vehicle issues.”

To further differentiate itself from its competition, Import Motors focuses on educating its customers about their vehicles so they can avoid potential problems in the future. “Today, people can use the Internet to find out more about their cars than they ever thought possible, but not every vehicle owner is self-educated in this way,” explains Mr. Mast. “With our extensive knowledge and experience, we’re able to supply our customers with the right information and help them differentiate between truth and rumor.”

It has become commonplace for auto repair shops to offer their customers free “check engine” light diagnoses. However, according to Fritz Mast, owner of Import Motors in Oakland, getting a diagnosis from a shop that lacks a thorough knowledge of your particular vehicle can result in inaccurate solutions and unnecessary costs. “Sometimes, auto repair shops will give their customers diagnostic codes that are supposed to address their ‘check engine’ light issues, but those codes can be problematic,” he explains. “Rather than taking a diagnosis at face value, a shop should do more testing on that specific code.”

A common diagnosis for an illuminated “check engine” light is an oxygen sensor issue. However, while some repair shops will accept this diagnosis without a second thought, if the issue is actually caused by something else, the solution they offer may only be temporary. “Repair shops often diagnose a ‘check engine’ light as a faulty oxygen sensor, but this may simply be masking another underlying issue,” says Mr. Mast. “Some technicians get the diagnostic code and assume it’s telling them what’s wrong with the car, but it’s often more complicated than that. Sometimes it can lead to replacing a part that didn’t need to be replaced, which leaves the real problem unresolved.”

Considering the vague nature of diagnostic codes, Mr. Mast recommends taking your vehicle to a technician with a specific knowledge of its particular make and model. “When it comes to getting an accurate analysis of the problem, knowledge and experience can make a big difference,” he says. “You should also make sure the shop has the right equipment. Diagnosis can be complex with some European vehicles, so the technicians need to have specific machines in order to accurately find and resolve issues.”

Ultimately, taking your car to an experienced technician with a thorough knowledge of your vehicle will give you greater assurance about the accuracy of a “check engine” light diagnosis and enable you to avoid costly, unnecessary repairs.
