Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for Green building and remodeling contractors that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Home Healing Renovations Inc., the key to achieving and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction is simple: work closely with its clients to successfully turn their construction ideas into reality. “We believe that in order to make our customers happy, it’s crucial to be attentive and learn what they actually want,” says owner Jason Johnson. “Furthermore, every aspect of every project, from the written estimate to the onsite performance, should reflect a genuine commitment to helping the client end up with the project of their dreams and a deeply satisfying experience with the construction process.”

Home Healing Renovations has been providing construction and remodeling services for residential and commercial clients in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties since 2009. The company’s primary focus is large residential rehabilitation multi-room remodels and full design-build projects, but it’s also qualified to perform renovation work like structural improvement services; seismic retrofitting; foundation replacement; and remediation of water damage, dry rot, decay, and mold.

Unlike less experienced contractors that take a hands-off approach to interacting with their clients during the construction process, Home Healing Renovations emphasizes clear communication throughout every step of every project. “Finding the right way to meet a customer’s goals while remaining within their budget and schedule is an art form,” says Mr. Johnson. “What we offer our clients is a thorough, customer-centered, holistic approach to the construction process. Ultimately, we strive to utilize our wide-ranging skills to create environments of beauty, balance and harmony.”

This service-oriented approach to every aspect of its work is another distinguishing attribute of Home Healing Renovations. “We take the time to determine the best ways to care for our customers,” says Mr. Johnson. “By choosing high-caliber people for our team and imparting to them the importance of customer service, we’re able to provide our clients with both quality finished products and gratifying overall experiences.”

Industry Info

While it started on the fringes of the construction industry, Green building has gradually gained widespread regard as an alternative approach to remodeling, largely due to concurrent increases in government regulation, consumer concern and industry innovation. According to Jason Johnson, owner of Home Healing Renovations in Berkeley, this is particularly true of the Bay Area. “People in the Bay Area are more willing to put their money where their values are,” he says. “It’s also easy to access sustainable materials, which isn’t the case in other parts of the United States.”

While conscientious consumers were once limited in their remodeling product choices, the expansive variety of options available today means they don’t have to sacrifice style for integrity. “In the past, consumers had to choose between aesthetics and ethics because there weren’t as many options with sustainable materials,” explains Mr. Johnson. “Now, people are able to get the look they want for their project and also feel comfortable with its impact on their health and the environment. It’s becoming more of a win-win situation—one where consumers don’t need to compromise in order to uphold their values.”

Another benefit that consumers are seeing is a gradual decline in the costs associated with Green building. “While Green building is generally more expensive than traditional construction, as the market becomes more competitive, sustainable materials are becoming more affordable,” says Mr. Johnson.

While some sceptics call it a trend, Mr. Johnson says the recent popularity of Green building stems from genuine concerns about important issues. “There’s a lot more awareness today about the impact construction materials and practices can have, which is why the industry is finally starting to address these things on a wider scale. One major area of concern is health ramifications. People want to make sure the materials and products they use in their homes aren’t going to have a negative effect on their families.”

Consumers are also concerned about the environmental impact of their construction projects. “At some point in the future, every part of a home is going to be recycled, composted or put into a landfill, so it’s important to consider the long-term environmental consequences of your remodeling project,” says Mr. Johnson. “Sustainable materials are also a concern—more and more consumers want to know where their materials are coming from and if they were sustainably harvested.”

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Jason Johnson

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE

Jason Johnson: Summiting Success

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

BERKELEY — As the son of two construction professionals, it’s no surprise that Jason Johnson was introduced to the industry at a young age. After more than two decades, he looks back on some of the influential factors that inspired him to take up the family trade. “Both of my parents were in construction, but I think my mom’s involvement had a particular impact on me because I found it very inspirational to see her break into a male-dominated field,” he recalls. “I also remember watching my dad dig footings for a new deck and then seeing the finished product just a couple of days later. It was incredible to see something go from a hole in the ground to a complete structure.”

Today, as owner of Home Healing Renovations, Jason continues to have a fascination with the building process. “I like collaborating with my clients to bring their dreams to life,” he says. “In many cases, a client will come to me with a single concept, but hidden within that concept might be eight different needs that must be met. I really enjoy the process of unpacking those and creating a design that provides a holistic solution.”

Originally from Indiana, Jason came to the Bay Area in 2008 and currently lives in Alameda with his wife and their children. As an ardent advocate of environmental sustainability, he says he appreciates the Bay Area’s eco-conscious character. “As a contractor, there are a lot of opportunities for me to do Green remodeling and construction here, which really aligns with my personal values.”

Outside of work, Jason engages in a variety of activities, from spending time with his family to pursing outdoor endeavors. “One of my main pastimes is mountain climbing,” he says. “I’ve summited Mount Shasta twice, and I’m looking at going up to Mount Rainier sometime this year. I also like canoeing, kayaking and hiking.” In addition, Jason dedicates time to political activism and volunteering with young adults. “I do a certain amount of street protesting, mostly for environmental causes, but sometimes for social justice as well. I attend some type of rally at least once a month, and spend a couple of weeks every summer taking young people in the community camping.”

In his life and career, Jason espouses the importance of preserving the environment for future generations. “As a father, I want my kids to be able to enjoy a beautiful planet, and one way I can contribute to that is by making a positive impact with my job,” he says. “Whether it’s conserving resources by reusing materials or designing homes to consume less energy, there are a lot of different ways I’m able to incorporate environmentally-friendly practices in my profession.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Jason says he’d look for his next peak experience. “I would probably climb a mountain in a new location. I’ve always wanted to go to Alaska—there are some really beautiful mountains up there.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: What’s the most death-defying feat you’ve ever attempted?
A: Climbing a dry glacier on the northern side of Mount Shasta.

Q: If you could time travel, would you go to the past or the future?
A: The past. I would probably go to the Renaissance—it seemed like such an elegant time.

Q: Is there a book that you’ve found influential over the years?
A: There are two that come to mind: “Way of the Peaceful Warrior” by Dan Millman, which has helped my spiritual and personal growth, and “Mountaineering: The Freedom of the Hills,” which pertains to my passion for mountain climbing.

Q: What was your favorite toy as a child?
A: My Batman costume.

Q: Music or talk radio?
A: Talk radio. I listen to KPFA a lot.

  • The Importance of Long-Term Goals in Remodeling

BERKELEY — While some remodeling projects are relatively simple, others involve multiple phases that consist of consecutive segments leading up to an eventual finished product. In this scenario, it’s important to think about your project holistically, considering both the initial phases and the final result. By establishing long-term goals ahead of time, you can better ensure efficiency throughout the remodeling process.

The biggest benefit of establishing long-term remodeling goals is it enables your contractor to plan efficiently and design consecutive phases to be compatible with future ones. In contrast, when long-term goals aren’t established, work performed in a project’s early phases may have to be redone to accommodate later ones, which can result in reduced efficiency and substantial added cost. To avoid wasting time and money, be sure to discuss your long-term goals in great detail before the work begins.

Video: Planning Your Design Holistically

Complete Video Transcription:

BERKELEY — Host, Sarah Rutan: If you’re planning on remodeling your home, you’ll want to be sure to design holistically if you’re planning on building in stages. Today, we’re in Berkeley with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Jason Johnson of Home Healing Renovations, to hear more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Jason Johnson: Whenever I go out to meet with a client, I figure that I’m in some early phase of a long, expansive remodeling project and that I want to encourage our clients to think about their projects in their homes holistically. And to communicate with me or their contractor about their long range goals. Because as we design the first project, the project that we’re called there to do, there are changes that we can make or ways to incorporate their future goals to be able to make later projects more efficient, more cost effective, and ultimately be able to help them move toward their broader goals, to the long range goals, with lower costs and less impact on their homes by incorporating those earlier on for the project that we are initially called for.

Jason and his team are really great at listening to what you want and helping plan it out. One of the negatives with them, some of the stuff is kind of nebulous, like pricing, so look out for that as you're working with them. I definitely think the team did a wonderful job. I felt some things weren't explained cost-wise, so that could have been done better.
