Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for carpet and upholstery cleaning companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For General Carpet Upholstery Tile and Rug Cleaning, the key to achieving and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction is simple: take a detail-oriented approach to each job and focus on providing quality in every aspect of its work. “I truly care about my clients and their homes, and that’s reflected in the care I put into cleaning their carpeting and upholstery,” says owner Murray Kahrnoff. “I give my customers value that they aren’t going to get anywhere else.”

General Carpet Upholstery Tile and Rug Cleaning has been using advanced cleaning methods to remove stains and odors from carpet, area rugs, upholstery, and tile and grout since 1985. The company works with residential and commercial clients throughout Alameda County, and it offers annual and biannual preventative maintenance plans for their convenience.

Unlike carpet and upholstery cleaning companies that strive to reduce their operating costs by using substandard cleaning products and low-grade equipment, General Carpet Upholstery Tile and Rug Cleaning exclusively uses products and equipment that consistently provide high-quality results. “By combining my high standards for quality with my industry education and skills, I’m able to maximize my customers’ investments,” says Mr. Kahrnoff. “They’re very grateful when they see the difference my services make in restoring the beauty of their homes.”

General Carpet Upholstery Tile and Rug Cleaning further differentiates itself from its competition by making customer health a top priority. “I see a lot of clients with respiratory problems like asthma and other illnesses related to indoor air quality, so my goal on every job is to make the home healthier than it was when I arrived,” says Mr. Kahrnoff. “My cleaning services can even leave carpeting healthier than it was the day the homeowner bought it.”

Industry Info

The carpet cleaning industry has very little regulation, which has led to some unscrupulous companies that present a professional appearance even though they lack the proper training and experience. “Unfortunately, some carpet cleaners get business without using quality products and equipment or even trained workers,” says Murray Kahrnoff, owner of General Carpet Upholstery Tile and Rug Cleaning in Hayward. “These companies are dangerous because they’re purely profit-based; they’re not looking to develop relationships with their clients or take care of them after the fact. Ultimately, that gives the industry a bad name.”

Mr. Kahrnoff recommends carefully researching your options when looking for a carpet cleaning company and verifying things like background, education, and certifications before hiring. He also advises hiring a company that’s certified by the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration (IICRC), the only certifying body for carpet and upholstery cleaning in the United States. “This is even more important as carpet and upholstery products become more complicated,” he says. “There are so many new textures and styles of carpet fibers coming out that carpet cleaning has basically become its own science.”

In fact, new carpeting is being manufactured from recycled materials such as plastic bottles, and new grades of polyester fiber have made carpet products softer and longer-lasting than ever before. However, improper cleaning can damage these new fibers and materials and cause them to under-perform, which can void the manufacturer’s warranty and force homeowners to replace their carpeting much sooner than expected.

“You can protect yourself by hiring a company that has a reputation for good carpet cleaning services and is committed to keeping up with new technologies,” says Mr. Kahrnoff. “A carpet cleaner’s job is to clean surfaces correctly and protect customers and their investments, so you shouldn’t settle for anything less.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How long will it take you to clean my carpet?

A: It depends on the size of the job, but I’m very efficient and organized, so I can often clean carpet much faster than other companies. My method also has a fast drying time—four to five hours in most cases.

Q: How much will it cost to clean my carpet?

A: I charge by the square foot, so it depends on how much carpet you need cleaned. I also don’t charge extra to remove gum, tar, grease or oil unless the carpet is extremely soiled, and I’ll tell you about any extra charges before work begins.

Q: Are your cleaning materials safe for my children and pets to be around?

A: Absolutely. The cleaning products I use are designed to remove stains while being safe for the home. I understand that many people are concerned about their kids and pets coexisting with the cleaning process, so I make sure to clearly explain the steps I take to ensure safety.

Q: Is there really a difference between steam cleaning and dry cleaning?

A: Yes. First of all, every carpet manufacturer recommends getting a hot water extraction (steam) cleaning from a truck-mounted, high-efficiency system. If you use the wrong cleaning system, you risk voiding the warranty on your carpet. Also, dry cleaning can’t kill dust mites or remove microorganisms, so steam cleaning really is the better choice for improving indoor air quality.

Q: What should I do if I spill something on my carpet?

A: First, make sure you don’t rub or scrub at a stain—it’s a natural reaction, but it’ll only set the stain more. Blot at spills with plain water to pull the liquid up and away. If you’re patient, most of the spill will usually come out. If a stain won’t come out, call me and I’ll remove the rest of it before it sets.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Murray Kahrnoff

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE

Murray Kahrnoff: Keeping it Clean

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

HAYWARD – After more than 35 years in the carpet cleaning business, Murray Kahrnoff has established himself as a leading figure at the forefront of an ever-evolving industry. However, as with many success stories, his professional beginnings were somewhat inconspicuous. “I was in college and a friend of mine started a carpet cleaning business that became quite lucrative for him,” he recalls. “One day I accompanied him on a ride-along, and I ended up liking it so much that I quit college and went into carpet cleaning full time!”

Since establishing General Carpet Upholstery Tile and Rug Cleaning in 1984, Murray has been an active participant in his industry’s innovative progress. “I was very fortunate to enter this business at a foundational point in its development,” he says. “In addition to sitting on the Board of Directors for the Carpet and Fabricare Institute, I’ve done a lot of research and development for equipment and chemical manufacturers, which has contributed to the establishment of many current industry standards.”

Originally from Detroit, Michigan, Murray first came to the Bay Area on a business contract that didn’t pan out, and he liked the atmosphere so much that he decided to stay. Besides the weather and natural beauty, Murray says he enjoys working with the local clientele. “Consumers tend to be very educated in the Bay Area, which is helpful when we’re explaining the long-term benefits of our cleaning methodology.”

Outside of his professional career, Murray describes himself as an ardent hockey enthusiast. “I’m very passionate about ice hockey, both as a player and a spectator. It’s been a few years since I played, but I intend to go back and become certified as an official.” Off the ice, Murray enjoys spending quality time with his wife, Joann, as well as keeping up with their two children, Julie and Joseph, both of whom are pursuing their own careers. He also likes hanging out with his two adopted children: a malamute named Hunter and an English black lab named Cub.

In his life and career, Murray says being successful in business requires excellence on multiple fronts. “In everything we do, we try to operate at the pinnacle of our industry. Whether building and maintaining our customers’ confidence or using the most cutting-edge products and methods available, we’re committed to an ever-increasing level of service, quality and innovation.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he could retire tomorrow, Murray’s response is twofold. “The first thing I would do is take my wife on one of the most amazing trips she’s ever been on. Then, I’d get more involved in hockey, from recreational playing to coaching for youth leagues, as well as achieving my goal of becoming an official.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: Who’s your favorite musician?
A: Eric Clapton. I have a pretty extensive collection of his stuff, including original albums dating back to the early days when he was playing with Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck.

Q: What’s your favorite smell?
A: Steak.

Q: What’s your favorite sports team?
A: Since I’m from Michigan, I’ll always be a Detroit Red Wings fan, but I’ve also grown to love the San Jose Sharks.

Q: If you were a professional athlete, what number would you wear on your jersey?
A: Number 9, for my all-time favorite hockey player, Gordie Howe.

Q: What’s the most death-defying feat you’d ever attempted?
A: I had a 1973 Z1 900 Kawasaki that I pumped up to a 1050, and I used to reach speeds of up to 124 miles per hour while racing.

  • How to Choose a Quality Carpet Cleaning Company

HAYWARD — When choosing a carpet cleaning company, many consumers tend to look solely at price. However, the reality is that anyone can make a carpet look beautiful, but unless the job is performed with the right products and techniques, it may not last or make for a safe environment. That’s why it’s important to consider a company’s reputability and certified expertise—as well as the products it uses—before making a decision.

Reputability. Before hiring a carpet cleaning company, check its references and confirm it has the proper licensing and insurance. Regardless of whether you’ll be present for the service, make sure the carpet cleaner is someone you’re comfortable having in your home.

Training/certifications. Whenever possible, hire a carpet cleaning company that holds official industry certifications—its knowledge and training will go a long way toward ensuring quality results.

Products. Carpet cleaning technology has come a long way over the years, resulting in eco-friendly and non-allergenic products that clean effectively without the need for harmful chemicals. However, many companies continue to use outdated methods and products, resulting in compromised safety and quality.

Video: Selecting a Cleaning Company

Complete Video Transcription:

HAYWARD — Host, Sarah Rutan: Before choosing a carpet cleaner, there are a few things to consider before hiring. Today we’re in Hayward with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Murray Kahrnoff of General Carpet Upholstery Tile and Rug Cleaning to learn what he recommends.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Murray Kahrnoff: When choosing a carpet and upholstery cleaning company, choosing by price is not always the best way. And we’ve found that many of our customers who have chosen by price have been very unsatisfied. High quality companies tend to charge a little more, they invest more money into the cleaning process, in giving you a better healthier environment in your home. And one of the things to consider is that maybe that cost may be a little bit more upfront, but your long term costs are going to be far less.

The company that you chose by price tends to leave a lot more residue in the carpet. They don’t take the effort to make everything last longer. They’re more concerned about making it look good while they’re in your home and they’re not concerned how long it lasts. Therefore, when you’re choosing a high quality company, that is what we are concerned with. How long is that cleaning going to last for you? Making sure you get the value for your dollar. Making sure that your carpet and textiles, your upholstery, everything that we clean for you lasts longer and also stays cleaner longer. This is part of the process.

Murray does really good, quality work. He does excellent work. He is very helpful and knowledgeable. He did an outstanding job getting a difficult stain out of the carpet. When we called him, he gave us good advice about what to do about the stain until he could come out and clean it. When he did come, he was able to get it all out, and you couldn't even tell anything had happened. He is outstanding. He also offered advice about how to keep our carpet clean in between cleanings and how to improve our vacuum. He is a wealth of information about how to keep our carpet clean. We've gotten comments about how clean our carpet is. It's like brand new carpeting. I can't say enough good things about him. He's wonderful, and we wouldn't use anyone else.
