"Our goal is simple: provide every customer with high-quality workmanship at a reasonable price. Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for termite control companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Elite Bay Area Termite Control, the key to achieving and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction is simple: provide comprehensive value throughout every step of every job. “By combining honesty, expertise, punctuality and fair pricing into a single package, we’re able to offer a higher level of service, value and overall satisfaction,” explains owner Benjamin Kahner. “Everything we do is designed to make sure our customers have the best possible experiences.”

Elite Bay Area Termite Control provides both traditional (tent fumigation) and non-chemical (penetration foam, high-pressure injection) termite control services for residential and commercial clients throughout the Bay Area. The company is also qualified to repair wood structures that have been damaged by subterranean and drywood termites, and it offers several preventative treatments that help protect against future infestations.

Unlike termite control companies that strive to reduce their operating costs by using outdated equipment and products, Elite Bay Area Termite Control is committed to staying on the cutting edge of industry innovation in every aspect of its work. “Ongoing training is required at three-year intervals in the termite control industry, but we make it a point to attend training seminars ever year,” says Mr. Kahner. “By being proactive about ongoing education, we’re able to stay at the forefront of the industry and learn about the latest equipment and techniques before most companies.”

Another distinguishing attribute of Elite Bay Area Termite Control is its honest, customer-oriented business approach, which Mr. Kahner says isn’t always a given in the pest control industry. “Honesty is sometimes lacking in this business, so our sense of integrity is definitely one of our main competitive advantages. Too often, termite companies make unnecessary recommendations just to increase their profits. On the other hand, we treat every customer the way we’d want to be treated, which means we only recommend what’s absolutely necessary to take care of the problem.”

Industry Info

Orange oil is a popular option for dealing with termites, but according to Benjamin Kahner, co-owner of Elite Bay Area Termite Control in Belmont, when it’s used to treat an existing infestation, it can actually make things worse. “Orange oil has become a prevalent treatment option because of its nontoxic nature, but it’s important to remember that it’s a repellent, which means termites can actually smell it and dig further into the walls to get away from it,” he says. “It’s effective, but it’s better used as a preventative measure than a remedial one.”

In contrast to a repellent like orange oil, non-repellent treatments actually attract termites and act as a virus that spreads throughout the colony. Mr. Kahner believes this is a more effective treatment given the social proclivities of the target. “Like ants, termites are very social—they regurgitate the wood they ingest and feed it to each other, and they also lick and groom each other as a way to deal with fungal growth that accumulates on their skin,” he explains. “Because of their inclination toward these social practices, the termites actually do most of the work by spreading the treatment chemicals throughout the colony.”

How to differentiate termite types
If you’ve detected the presence of termites in your home, you might not know how to identify if they’re the subterranean or drywood variety. Fortunately, there are a couple of easy ways to tell the two apart. “Subterranean termites look like little black ants with wings, and they usually swarm during the spring,” says Mr. Kahner. “On the other hand, drywood termites look like little red ants with wings, and they swarm in late summer and early fall. Depending on their color and the time of year, you can determine which type of termite you have in your home.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How often should I have my house inspected for termites?

A: You should have your house inspected every two to three years, even if you don’t currently see any signs of infestation. Being proactive about inspections will help you prevent an infestation before it gets too serious.

Q: How long will my termite treatment last?

A: We give a three-year unconditional warranty, so your treatment will be good for that amount of time.

Q: Does the treatment include annual checkups?

A: Yes, we’ll come out and inspect your entire home once a year at no charge. If we find any issues, we’ll provide the necessary treatments, which are covered by the three-year warranty.

Q: Should I be concerned about the potential health risks of chemical treatment?

A: No. We use some of the least toxic products available, and the materials we use to treat termites are placed in inaccessible areas like underneath the house, which minimizes the risk of exposure.

Q: Can you repair damaged wood?

A: Yes, we have an in-house crew that can handle wood repairs and related construction needs.

Q: Do you have a referral program?

A: Yes. When you refer a friend or family member to us, we’ll give you 10 percent off your next termite service.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Jeremy Schreckengost

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE

Jeremy Schreckengost: A Constructive Collaboration

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Program Reporter

BELMONT — With a background in construction, Jeremy Schreckengost didn’t get involved in the pest control industry until a long-time friendship led to a professional collaboration. “My business partner, Ben Kahner, and I have been close friends since we were teenagers,” he explains. “His father owned a termite company, so he grew up in the business, whereas my experience was in construction. At one point, we started talking about starting our own business—one where we’d have the freedom to set our own standards and ideals. Over a period of about three years, these discussions culminated in the founding of Elite Bay Area Termite Control.”

As both the owner of the company and head of its wood repair department, Jeremy employs his construction skills to help customers make the most out of bad situations. “We provide custom repair of termite wood damage, which is pretty unique in our industry,” he says. “I enjoy engaging with homeowners and helping them get the most value out of their wood repairs. For instance, if we have to tear out a section of flooring, I’ll suggest taking advantage of the opportunity to implement structural or energy efficiency upgrades.”

A third-generation resident of the San Francisco Peninsula (where he lives with his wife, Marleena; son, Silar; and daughter, Audrey), Jeremy likes to spend his time outside of work enjoying the natural splendor of the Bay Area. “My weekends are just as full as my weekdays, as I’m usually on an outdoor excursion with my family,” he says. “We live in such a gorgeous area—I’ve been around the world two or three times, and I haven’t found any place that compares.”

In regard to his professional career, Jeremy says adhering to a high standard of quality is a must. “We maintain very high standards, and that’s reflected in the quality of the work we perform. However, we also like to save our customers money by tailoring our work to their specific needs. For instance, a general contractor might opt to knock down a whole room that’s afflicted with termite damage, but we have the patience to go in and conservatively make repairs while keeping the main structure intact.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he could retire tomorrow, Jeremy says he’d head out on the open road. “I’d probably buy a big RV and do some traveling. Another thing I’ve always wanted to do is buy some land in Booneville and build a cabin. I’ve already helped a friend build one, so hopefully the next one I build will be my own.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: What are your favorite sports teams?
A: The San Francisco 49ers and the San Francisco Giants.

Q: Talk radio or music?
A: Both—talk radio in the morning, music in the afternoon and evening.

Q: What’s your favorite local restaurant?
A: St. James Gate in Belmont.

Q: Do you collect anything?
A: I collect mementos from projects—mostly relics of old-fashioned construction or samples of wood damage.

Q: Pancakes or waffles?
A: Pancakes.

  • Common Signs of Termite Infestation

BELMONT — Despite the prevalence of termites in the Bay Area, many homeowners aren’t familiar with the signs of infestation. One of the most common signs is small, sand-like granules known as “termite pellets.” Often found on windowsills, these tiny pellets are created as termites eat away at the wood in a home. Another termite calling card is discarded wings, which, like pellets, tend to be found at random throughout the home.

A further sign of termite activity is mud tubes. These tiny holes (approximately the width of a drinking straw) are created by subterranean termites as they travel up from their nests beneath the ground. Mud tubes are typically found along cracks; beneath flooring; around baseboards; on pipes, piers and chimneys; and behind siding and plumbing fixtures. They also may extend over concrete foundations and other exposed surfaces.

Because termite infestation is such a common problem in Northern California, in addition to knowing what signs to look for, it’s a good idea to have a professional inspection performed every three to five years. By taking a preventative approach, you’ll be able to detect termite activity long before it becomes a serious problem.

Video: Frequency of Termite Inspections

Complete Video Transcription:

BELMONT — Host, Sarah Rutan: An important aspect of home maintenance is knowing when, and how often, to have a termite inspection. Today, we’re in Belmont with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Jeremy Schreckengost of Elite Bay Area Termite Control, to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Jeremy Schreckengost: A question that I often get is how frequently should I have a termite inspection on my home? Or how would I know if I had a termite issue? And the answer is, generally, you should have a full termite inspection of your home every three to five years, particularly living here in Northern California, where termites are kind of predictable.

So, signs that you may have termites in your home, you will find evidence of them, like, maybe on the window sills, something that looks like sand, like little granules. They’re called termite pellets. Also many times you might find little wings in the window sill or around your home. And also, like I was saying, that they are predictable, so they have what we call a swarm season.

So, those occur in March/April of the year and again in August/September. So, this is where the termites actually fly and they relocate, right? So, you can see them flying maybe in the back yard. If they’ve made inroads to the house, you’ll see them flying in your house. But they don’t fly around like a bee, like, Zzzz, like that. They kind of flutter. It’s a very distinctive, like, that’s different.

So, those are some of the things to look out for. But, generally, if you live in Northern California, you get an inspection every three to five years, you’ll catch things long before it becomes, like, a serious problem.
