Comparative Summary

Maintaining patient satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any dentist, but it’s even more important for dental practices that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Dr. Chew’s Dental Office – Richmond Neighborhood Family Dental, the key to achieving and maintaining high levels of patient satisfaction is simple: provide careful, individualized care that’s tailored to each person’s specific needs. “We feel a responsibility to spend quality time with our patients, so we always make sure they get the attention they deserve,” says Dr. Ka-Wing Chew. “We intentionally keep our practice small so we can provide this type of dental care, and our patients really appreciate that.”

Dr. Chew’s Dental Office has been providing dental services for all types of patients (including children) at its San Francisco facility since 1992. In addition to routine cleanings and check-ups, the practice has the training and equipment to treat periodontal disease and perform special periodontal cleanings; offer restorative treatments like bridges, dentures and dental implants; fit patients with traditional and clear (Invisalign) braces; and more.

Unlike dental practices that use outdated technology and equipment in an effort to reduce their operating costs, Dr. Chew’s Dental Office stays up-to-date with the latest innovations in the dental industry. “For example, we use digital x-rays instead of traditional film x-rays, which reduces the radiation our patients are exposed to and gives us clear x-rays that are better for diagnosis and treatment,” says Dr. Chew. “We also use dental examination cameras to view hard-to-see areas of patients’ mouths, which is especially helpful during exams and cleanings.”

Dr. Chew’s Dental Office further differentiates itself from its competition by promoting a relaxing atmosphere that’s built around patient comfort–the building itself features calming colors and relaxing music, and Dr. Chew and his staff maintain a calm demeanor throughout the dental process. “It’s important for our physical environment to be relaxing and welcoming so our patients don’t feel uncomfortable or rushed,” says Dr. Chew. “We strive to minimize their stress as much as possible.”

Industry Info

Many people don’t realize that poor oral health can impact and even worsen many health problems, including heart disease, diabetes, lung disease and Alzheimer’s disease. “There’s definitely a connection between gum disease and other health conditions,” says Dr. Ka-Wing Chew, owner of Dr. Chew’s Dental Office – Richmond Neighborhood Family Dental in San Francisco. “Gum disease causes inflammation, which can circulate infected blood cells throughout your body. That can cause you to feel sick and make other conditions worse.”

Luckily, Dr. Chew says optimal dental health isn’t hard for most people to attain—especially if they know how to properly care for their teeth. “The first thing you should do is visit your dentist at least twice a year for an examination and thorough cleaning. Many people don’t know they have gum disease until it’s advanced, and that can be hard on your health. A dentist can recognize gum disease and treat it early.”

For better dental (and overall) health, consider the following brushing and flossing tips:

  • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to protect your teeth and gums.
  • Hold your toothbrush so the head is beside the teeth and the bristles are at a 45-degree angle to the gum line. Never push hard enough to flatten the bristles; use light pressure so the bristles just stroke the gums.
  • Move the brush back and forth using a short motion. Do this several times before moving the brush to a new spot.
  • Brush the inside and outside of your teeth using an angled position, clean the chewing surfaces with the brush held flat, and brush your front teeth with up-and-down strokes.
  • Brush your tongue to remove bacteria.
  • Brush for at least two minutes, and be sure to give each tooth attention.
  • Replace your toothbrush every 60 to 90 days, as well as after you’ve been sick.
  • Floss daily. Press the floss between two teeth until it reaches your gums, curve it around one tooth, and move it up and away from your gums. Do this for all teeth. Make sure you floss gently so you don’t cause gum damage.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Dr. Ka-Wing Chew

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE

Dr. Ka-Wing Chew: An Honorable Achievement

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SAN FRANCISCO — When choosing a career path, the expectations of a parent can be a highly influential factor, as was the case for Dr. Ka-Wing Chew. By selecting a vocation that struck a balance between honoring parental expectations and fulfilling his personal aspirations, he was able to achieve an optimal level of success. “While still in high school, I started thinking about my options for a future career,” he remembers. “I’d always enjoyed working with my hands, but my father expressed a desire for me to be in a profession. Dentistry seemed to be a field that would satisfy both my interests and my father’s wishes, so I decided to become a dentist.”

Since founding Richmond Neighborhood Family Dental in 1992, Dr. Chew says his favorite part of dental work continues to be helping his patients look and feel their best. “I get great satisfaction from meeting the needs of my patients, whether they’re experiencing pain or have cosmetic issues. I have patients who tell me, ‘I try not to smile because my teeth look bad.’ After I’ve corrected the problem, they see their beautiful smile in the mirror and their faces just light up, and there’s nothing I enjoy more than the feeling that gives me.”

Originally from Hong Kong, Dr. Chew came to the United States when he was 11 years old and has resided in his adopted home of San Francisco ever since. Having spent four years attending dental school in Chicago, he says the Bay Area climate can’t be beat. “San Francisco can be cold, but compared to Chicago, it’s paradise.” Dr. Chew also appreciates the cultural diversity found within the city. “We have so many different neighborhoods in San Francisco, from Chinatown to Haight-Ashbury, and it’s neat to go from one area to the next and enjoy the unique things each has to offer.”

Outside of work, Dr. Chew engages in a variety of hobbies that include fishing in the San Francisco Bay and building computers. “Ever since childhood, I’ve enjoyed putting things together, and I’ve since applied that to computer technology,” he says. “I recently needed a new computer at my office, so instead of buying one, I built it myself.” In addition to his personal interests, Dr. Chew enjoys spending time with his wife, Connie, as well as keeping up with his two children, Renee and Brian, both of whom are pursuing their respective academic goals at California colleges.

In regard to his career, Dr. Chew says there’s only one way to treat patients: like family. “There’s no other way about it. Regardless of who’s sitting in my chair, I make it a point to treat that person with the utmost compassion and give them the same level of care I’d give to a close friend or family member.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he could retire tomorrow, Dr. Chew says he’d take a few days to relax before embarking on his next dentistry-related venture. “After resting a bit and maybe going on a fishing trip, I’d look into doing some volunteering, whether teaching at a dental school or helping out at a local health center. That would enable me to both give back to my community and keep myself occupied.”

  • Taking a Preventative Approach to Dental Care

SAN FRANCISCO — When it comes to dental care, the best approach is a preventative one. Being proactive about both at-home and professional cleanings can go a long way toward preventing the kinds of problems that require treatment.

The reason dental hygiene is important is simple: Your mouth is basically a breeding ground for bacteria, and having an abundance of oral bacteria can cause maladies such as cavities, gum disease, and bad breath. The best way to combat bacteria and keep your mouth healthy is to clean your teeth regularly and thoroughly.

Preventative dental hygiene starts at home with your brushing and flossing habits. You should brush your teeth a minimum of once a day, but two to three times is preferable for maintaining healthy teeth and gums, as well as fresh breath. Flossing on a daily basis is equally important, as a toothbrush is unable to reach in between the teeth, where food often becomes lodged.

While good cleaning habits at home are the cornerstone of dental hygiene, it’s also important to augment your own efforts with professional cleanings. You should have your teeth cleaned and examined by a dentist at least twice a year, but depending on the condition of your oral health, you may need to schedule visits on a more recurrent basis.

Video: Keeping Your Teeth Healthy

Complete Video Transcription:

SAN FRANCISCO — Host, Sarah Rutan: When caring for your teeth, its important to know how to keep them healthy and cavity free. Today, we’re in San Francisco with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Dr. Chew of Dr. Chew’s Dental Office to hear his advice on dental hygiene.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Dr. Ka-Wing Chew: The two best way for dental treatment is not to have it. The way to not to have dental treatment is for you to brush your teeth and floss your teeth minimally one time a day. Of course, two or three times is better. You know, in the mouth is there a lot of bacteria, and the bugs left in the mouth enjoy left in the dark and moist places. So, they multiply.

And what they do in this place is have a party. And after having a party of food and whatever they do is multiply and you have a lot more of these bugs. What they do is they put out poops that kill – that cause cavities in your teeth and gum disease. So, if you remove the bugs, you will have healthy teeth and healthy bodies.

So, make sure that you come to see a dentist minimally six months, every six months. Some people need to come to see dentist a lot more time in the year. Some people will need to see dentists or have their teeth cleaned three times a year or two times a year.

So, make sure that you have prevention. That means that you have to clean your teeth better, learn the proper way of cleaning the teeth, proper way of flossing, and see your dentist regularly; minimally, six months.
