The biggest changes to the home repair industry in recent years have come from products that are more environmentally-friendly than their predecessors. Of the numerous products available, perhaps none has been as popular with homeowners as paint that contains low levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are organic chemicals that can be dangerous to human health and cause harm to the environment. “Most home repair and painting companies are exclusively using low-VOC paints now,” says David Bianchi, President of David Bianchi Home Repair, Inc. in Vacaville. “Simply put, they’re better for the environment and the health of homeowners.”
If you suspect the paint job on your house has worn out, look out for a phenomenon known as “chalking,” which occurs when the substrate loses most of its resin and leaves a chalky residue that’s discernible to the touch. Chalking primarily affects stucco surfaces, but wood houses are also susceptible. Another problem to watch for is the dulling of color, which is especially noticeable on wood surfaces. A lot of wood trim is semi-gloss, which means it loses its sheen and becomes dull as time passes.
After chalking and dulling, the next most obvious signs of worn-out paint are cracking and peeling. It’s important to repaint at the first signs of cracking and peeling—not just because it’s less expensive, but also because once paint starts cracking, it allows moisture to enter and puts the actual substrate in jeopardy by exposing it to the elements.
If a contractor is able to get to the paint just as it starts to chalk or lose its sheen, it’s simply a matter of doing some light prep work before repainting. However, if the paint has already started to crack and peel, the contractor will have to scrape everything off—a process that entails sanding, grinding and other prep work. For this reason, it’s far more cost-effective to repaint at the first signs of worn-out paint.

A: It really depends on the job. Sometimes snags and difficulties on one job can delay the start date of another, but we’ll inform you ahead of time if that ever happens.

A: Unless your project is very small, it will probably require a permit. You don’t have to worry about obtaining one, though—we’ll take care of the permit process for you.

Q: Do you use subcontractors?

A: We don’t use subcontractors unless it’s a job that requires specialized expertise. All our employees are long-term, and we don’t hire any day laborers, either.

Q: Will Mr. Bianchi be onsite during my job?
