I have had some really unfortunate experiences with plumbers, so I can't stress enough how great they are. They're on time, polite, know what they are doing, and do a great job. These are the people I recommend.

They knew were doing, and they did it quickly. I already had a diagnosis from another company that I couldn't get to come out, and when Bragg looked at it, they found additional things that were wrong. They're very confident. Honestly, I had a really great experience. I wouldn't change anything.

I was very pleased with the work, they were on time, and they cleaned up well. The lead man, Zach, was great. John, the owner, has been very good to me and worked with me with my rentals and has done work for me here. He has always gotten back to me right away and if there is an emergency, he gets out there right away.

Zach, the lead man, is a great guy. He is upfront, honest, and he does incredible work. He gets things done on time and correctly. He will come over after hours to fix things.

Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for plumbing/HVAC companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Bragg Plumbing & Heating, the key to achieving and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction is simple: take a transparent approach to every job that includes being upfront with everything from project details to pricing. “When we quote a price, that’s the price the customer pays,” affirms President John Honey. “There are never any tricks, gimmicks or surprises with us–we explain every fee and let the customer know about it in advance of the final bill, which they really appreciate.”

Bragg Plumbing & Heating has been providing plumbing, heating and cooling services for residential clients in Marin, Sonoma, Napa, and San Francisco Counties since 1968. In addition to its general plumbing and HVAC capabilities, the company has special expertise with air duct and dryer vent cleaning, sewer line replacements, tankless water heater installations and repairs, and more.

Unlike less experienced plumbing/HVAC companies that undervalue the importance of communicating with their customers, Bragg Plumbing & Heating takes a personalized approach to every job that ensures customers are kept well informed throughout the process. “Our customers know they don’t have to go through three layers of bureaucracy to ask me a question about their projects,” says Mr. Honey. “Staying in contact with them allows me to keep my finger on the pulse of the company and make sure we’re providing the quality we’ve promised.”

Another distinguishing characteristic of Bragg Plumbing & Heating is its emphasis on fostering positive, long-lasting relationships between its clients and technicians. “We have a lot of returning customers who call and ask for the same technician they had last time, and we always try to maintain that continuity,” says Mr. Honey. “Also, if any issues arise from a prior job, we try to send the same technician who worked on it and is familiar with the specific situation.”

Industry Info

Heating and air conditioning systems play prominent roles in any home, so keeping ducts clean is crucial for maintaining indoor air quality. Many different kinds of businesses offer duct cleaning as a service, from carpet cleaners to mold remediation contractors. The reason is simple: Unlike many aspects of home maintenance that are regulated by municipal codes and standards, duct cleaning doesn’t require a contractor’s license to perform. Unfortunately, this lack of regulation means many companies that offer duct cleaning don’t possess adequate knowledge or high standards of performance.

“Your duct system is an extension of your furnace and air conditioning system, so it’s best to have a licensed HVAC contractor handle the cleaning,” says John Honey, president of Bragg Plumbing & Heating in Novato. “An inexperienced company may simply clean the ducts and be on their way, but an HVAC contractor is familiar with the entire apparatus and will take a holistic approach to the service, offering expert solutions in addition to performing the cleaning.”

The serious nature of duct cleaning is reflected in the standards set by the National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA), which detail the specifics of the service and how it should be performed. One fundamental aspect of the NADCA guidelines that inexperienced companies tend to neglect is a thorough inspection of the HVAC system prior to performing the cleaning service. An inspection should preempt every service, as damaged, worn-out or malfunctioning system components will continue to be a problem even if the system is clean. A licensed HVAC contractor that follows the NADCA guidelines will examine the system before cleaning it and inform the homeowner of any potential problems.

According to NADCA guidelines, the cleaning process begins with putting the entire duct system under negative pressure, which creates a sealed suction that collects all dust and debris into a common containing unit. While negative pressure clears a lot of the dust on its own, additional cleaning is needed to thoroughly dislodge the debris that collects within the ductwork. Other steps include removing and cleaning system components like supply registers, return air grilles, and diffusers, as well as dismantling, cleaning and reinstalling the workings of the system’s blower section. As Mr. Honey says, in addition to proper methodology, duct cleaning should also be performed with patience and thoroughness. “You can’t rush the job—you have to allocate the right amount of time to ensure it’s done thoroughly and to standard.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I know when my air ducts need to be cleaned?

A: Opinions range from once a year to three times a year, so we leave it for our customers to decide. If you turn on your furnace in the winter and it emits a musty smell or you see dust blowing out of your air ducts, it’s time for a cleaning.

Q: How long will it take to clean my ducts?

A: A complete duct cleaning usually takes two to three hours, depending on how many ducts are in your home.

Q: How soon can you start?

A: We can often come out the same day, but it also depends on our call volume, especially at peak times of the year. We tend to get a lot of heating system calls at the beginning of winter, as well as a lot of air conditioning system calls at the beginning of summer, so we can get a little backed up during those times.

Q: Do you charge for inspections?

A: No, we offer free duct inspections.

Q: Do you charge more for Saturday appointments?

A: No, Saturday appointments are the same price as weekday appointments.

Q: Do you work on sewers?

A: Yes, we specialize in trenchless sewer replacement, which is the most cost-efficient method of fixing sewer problems.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM John Honey

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE

John Honey: A Tangible Transition

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Program Reporter

NOVATO — After more than two decades in the tech industry, John Honey was ready to transition from the virtual world to something more hands-on. “I was in the sales and marketing side of the high-tech field, working for Fortune 500 companies, and eventually I decided to get out and become an independent business owner,” he explains. “While looking for a business to purchase, I came across Bragg Plumbing and Heating, and it seemed like a good fit. Besides having a fair amount of business knowledge, I had done a lot of plumbing work in my home, so the industry wasn’t totally foreign to me. After taking over the company in 2003, I got my licenses in plumbing and HVAC, as well as my general contractor’s license.”

Today, John says he appreciates the palpable nature of his second career. “I like the fact that what I’m doing now is very tangible and hands-on, as opposed to the tech industry, where everything is very abstract. Fixing a problem with a router just isn’t as satisfying as fixing a leaky pipe or a broken faucet. I really enjoy the simplicity of seeing the results of my work and making a concrete difference in someone’s day.”

Raised in Oakland, John now lives in San Rafael with his wife, Jane, where he enjoys the many attributes the Bay Area is known for. “Besides the rich diversity and vibrant culture, the Bay Area is a very economically viable place to own a business. Plus, since I’m an avid tennis player, I appreciate the good weather.”

In regard to his professional career, John espouses the importance of transparency in business. “To me, transparency means being honest about your intentions and doing what you say you’re going to do,” he explains. “We’re very open about how we do things here, so our customers understand up front what to expect, without any misrepresentation.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, John says he’d volunteer his time to be a resource for younger generations. “I’d like to be a mentor to young people and share some of the knowledge I’ve acquired over my 59 years, whether in regard to business or just general life skills. Of course, I’d also spend some more time playing tennis.”

  • Hiring the Right Duct Cleaning Technician

NOVATO — Unlike many contracted home maintenance services, air duct cleaning is unregulated, which means it doesn’t require a special license to perform. For this reason, a common misconception is that any service provider can do just as good a job as another. This isn’t necessarily the case: Like many tasks, air duct cleaning is more complex than it seems, and requires a certain level of knowledge and skill, as well as specific equipment.

To ensure a thorough, quality service, you’ll want to hire a duct cleaning technician that adheres to professional standards and uses correct techniques. While a novice might simply use a brush to clean inside the ductwork, a well-versed professional will put the whole system under negative pressure and use a powerful vacuum collection device to suck out dirt and debris. In addition to thoroughness, another concern about using a novice technician is the potential for accidental damage to occur while cleaning, which will likely go unidentified due to ductwork’s concealed nature. All in all, it’s best to hire an HVAC contractor with a C20 license to clean your air ducts.

Video: Who should I Hire to Clean My Air Ducts?

Complete Video Transcription:

NOVATO — Host, Sarah Rutan: Since air duct cleaning isn’t a regulated industry, you should be selective about who you hire to perform this service. Today we’re in Novato with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, John Honey of Bragg Plumbing & Heating to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, John Honey: I think it’s really important that homeowners realize, is that when it comes to duct clean specifically, that it’s an unregulated industry. So basically anybody can say they clean ducts, but there are right ways to do it and wrong ways to do it.

But it’s really important that they adhere to professional standards, which would include incorporating cleaning the ducts using negative pressure and I would use a licensed contractor, specifically and HVAC contractor with a C20 license, and I think if you do that, you’ll be well served.
