Savvy Consumer Tips

Dear Savvy Consumer,

Do you have a great mechanic? I do, but it wasn’t easy finding Rolf years ago. Isn’t having a great mechanic a little like discovering a great little neighborhood restaurant? You may be reluctant to tell others about it for fear that it will be overrun with new customers, and you will no longer be able to get a table!  You might come across the same problem trying to get the name of a highly recommended mechanic from a friend or colleague. It can be like prying teeth. We are all eager to find an auto repair shop that doesn’t recommend unnecessary work, gets the job done right the first time, and remedies mistakes quickly and with a professional attitude.

So back to my question, do you have a great mechanic? Are you satisfied with the service you’re getting?  Take a few minutes and look over the checklist I have created to help you evaluate your current mechanic. (PDF or Podcast) If your shop doesn’t pass muster, feast your eyes on the list of Diamond Certified auto repair shops for your county at www.diamondcertified.org. These mechanics have a proven track record of satisfying their customers. They are rated “highest in quality” in a large survey of past customers and you can see actual customer comments on each company’s profile page.

It’s time to drive right on by that mediocre auto repair shop and find yourself a great mechanic – today. Why now?  Finding someone who offers quality auto repair will reduce the stress in your life and make you feel like a very savvy consumer.

Sincerely,

Chris Bjorklund

Stop Junk Mail, Save a Forest

Each year, the production of junk mail in the U.S. uses more than 100 million trees and produces emissions equal to 3.7 million cars. To end the waste, ForestEthics (www.ForestEthics.org) has launched a campaign for a Do Not Mail Registry (www.DoNotMail.org), similar to the popular Do Not Call Registry that curbs unwanted telemarketing calls.

Until the registry becomes a reality, take matters into your own hands. Download a Junk Mail Kit (www.StopJunkMail.org), produced by the Bay Area Recycling Outreach Coalition, and follow the steps to stop unwelcome mail. Cancel catalogs with the help of Catalog Choice (www.CatalogChoice.org).

No time to stop junk mail yourself? GreenDimes (www.GreenDimes.com), a Palo Alto company, will get your name off mailing lists for a small fee. And, they plant five trees for every new customer!

Scammers Take Joy Out of Gift Giving

A gift card can be the perfect gift for graduation or any occasion—if you protect yourself from a variety of scams that leave gift card recipients with little more than a colorful piece of plastic.

Before you buy a card, inspect it to make sure it hasn’t been tampered with and that the PIN, if there is one, is still hidden under the protective, scratch-off coating. And beware of using one of the online card exchange services that allow visitors to buy, sell or trade gift cards. The opportunity to pay less than the face value of the card may be tempting, but there have been cases of buyers receiving stolen, expired or counterfeit cards. If you want to buy a gift card online, reduce your risk of hacking by buying only through a secure Web site. Of course, the only way to shop truly risk free is to buy gifts at a store.

ScamBusters (www.ScamBusters.org) offers more information about gift card scams (http://www.scambusters.org/giftcard.html), as well as tips for protecting yourself.

Kudos from Diamond Certified Customers

We had heard of Diamond Certified, but didn't really know much about it. Earlier this year we began remodeling our kitchen, and in the course of that project became well acquainted with your program. We used two Diamond Certified companies in the remodel, Artistic Stone of San Leandro and Precision Cabinets and Trim of Brentwood. Both performed flawlessly! They gave us top quality products and service, as well as incredible value. If these two companies exemplify the type of business that earns Diamond Certification, then it is an honor every consumer should look for when selecting goods and services.

You did not miss the mark when you bestowed your highest quality level on these companies.

Sincerely,

Michael and Diane Switzer
