Helping Me Help Myself

Automatic Garage Door Corporation, a Diamond Certified company, strives to educate customers about their garage doors.

One sign that you’re dealing with a consumer-focused company is if the service people routinely take extra time to educate you about the product or service you’re buying. I started thinking about this after having my garage door repaired by Automatic Garage Door Corporation, a Diamond Certified company.

We needed a service call because when my husband closed the garage door a few days earlier, it came crashing down about two feet from the floor. Fortunately no one was hurt. As it turns out, the main spring had snapped. Why did this happen? The technician explained that the spring is like a muscle in the arm—it bends and flexes every time the door opens and closes. Since we use our garage door as an entrance to the house (rather than the front door), the spring wore out prematurely. If we had performed more regular maintenance over the past several years, it might have lasted longer.

After the technician replaced the spring, not only did he tune up the entire system, he also gave me a lesson on garage door maintenance. He suggested tuning it up ourselves at least four times a year so all the moving parts last longer. That means visually inspecting the unit; tightening all the screws, nuts and bolts; and thoroughly spraying the spring itself with WD-40 or a similar product. He also said we should try to enter the house through the front door instead of the garage.

Check Out Free Family Passes This Summer

The Family Pass is available to San Francisco families with children up to 18 years old.

Recently, I was returning a book to the library in my San Francisco neighborhood when I overheard a woman requesting free passes to the zoo. After she left, I asked the librarian to explain. She told me a “Family Pass” is available to San Francisco residents who have library cards—it entitles them to free admission to 23 participating attractions, including the California Academy of Sciences, the Exploratorium, the Japanese Tea Garden, the Aquarium of the Bay and various swimming pools.

The Family Pass can save you a lot of money because some of these attractions have high general admission fees. The pass covers up to two adults accompanied by up to four children. You can only check out one pass at a time, restrictions apply and quantities are limited. To find out more about how to use the Family Pass, visit www.sfkids.org. Other Bay Area libraries have similar offerings as well.

Kudos from Diamond Certified Consumers

Dear Diamond Certified:

Acme Auto Repair was recommended to me by another auto repair shop because they were so busy. I was satisfied with all the work they performed on my wife’s BMW. The work would have cost two or three times as much if I had brought it to the dealership. We received honest quotes and an A-1 engine steam cleaning. I would recommend Acme Auto Repair to everyone.

Thank you,
C.R., Contra Costa County
