The Little Things

Chris’ “towel elephant,” courtesy of Hotel Nacional de Cuba

When was the last time you returned to your hotel room and found a handwritten note like this from the maid?

Hello, dear guests!
I hope you enjoyed your stay with us. I would like to wish you a wonderful trip tomorrow and good luck, health and best wishes. Come back soon. Thank you.
Your maid,
Marlen
e

Marlene also spent extra time creating the “towel elephant” seen in the photo. Look closely and you’ll see that the eyes are shampoo bottle tops from the bathroom!

You may be surprised to learn that this special “thank you” occurred at Hotel Nacional de Cuba in Havana, Cuba. This is a government-run, 450-room hotel that caters to tour groups from all over the world. It was the place to stay years ago—Frank Sinatra and Al Capone were guests at one time. While the hotel now needs major renovations and updates (true for most everything in Havana), the staff tried their best to make our experience as positive as possible, which made up for the hotel’s other shortcomings.

The power of simple gestures is vastly undervalued in business, and that’s a mistake. When a business takes the extra time and effort to make its customers feel special, the customers never forget. I know that whenever I think about my trip to Cuba, I’ll think about the maid, her handwritten note and one goofy elephant.

10 Consumer Information Websites

Consumer information websites can help you make informed buying decisions.

Knowledge is power, and that’s why it’s important to know where to get consumer information when you need it. Here’s a list of some of my favorite sites.

  1. consumerworld.org: A public service resource guide with more than 2,000 links to everything “consumer.”
  2. consumerist.com: A consumer affairs blog owned by a subsidiary of Consumer Reports. The focus is on consumerism and readers’ experiences with businesses. You’ll find complaints and tips.
  3. consumerreports.org: Founded in 1936, Consumer Reports is the leading independent testing and advocacy organization. A variety of products are rated and consumers can find buying advice.
  4. bbb.org: The Better Business Bureau mediates complaints against businesses, issues warnings on frauds and scams, and publishes reliability reports on companies.
  5. fraud.org: Sponsored by the National Consumers League, this website accepts complaints and educates consumers about telemarketing fraud, identity theft, and business fraud.
  6. autosafety.org: Search the Center for Auto Safety website for recalls, lemon laws and lawsuits on different makes and models. Founded by Ralph Nader.
  7. iihs.org: The Institute for Highway Safety has accident facts; crash test results; and news releases about safety for cars, drivers and pedestrians.
  8. cartalk.com: This radio show is on National Public Radio, and the website includes information on buying, selling and repairing cars.
  9. charitynavigator.org and charitywatch.org: Guides to wise giving that identify scam charities as well as well-run charities.
  10. consumer-action.org: This educational nonprofit group publishes multi-lingual consumer information on topics ranging from “complaining effectively” to “establishing credit.”
