Twice is Not Nice

Choosing a company that emphasizes quality and consistency is the key to any positive consumer-to-business transaction.

We often take it for granted when things get done right the first time. It’s something I hadn’t reflected on too much until recently, when I had three frustrating experiences that, because of mistakes, required a lot of extra effort on my part.

First, I bought a pair of shoes from a store about 30 minutes away from my house. When I got home, I discovered the clerk had put the wrong size in the box, which meant another trip back to the store. Next, I bought a universal remote control at an electronics store and based my selection solely on the salesperson’s advice. When the installer came to my home, he said I had purchased the wrong device for my system. He proceeded to sell me the right one on the spot, but he couldn’t process a refund on the other one, even though he works for the same company. I now had to go to the store in person for a refund. More time wasted.

The last experience was the most involved and annoying. I went to an eye doctor for the first time, which required me to travel across town and pay for parking. I took the new prescription to be filled elsewhere, and when I picked up the glasses, I immediately knew something was wrong. I felt dizzy and cross-eyed. Who made the mistake? Was it the doctor or the optician? I had to get another eye exam and a redo on the prescription. I estimate I wasted four or five hours sorting this out.

I think we all know that mistakes happen every day in consumer-to-business transactions. It’s easy to mix up a pair of shoes when the customer has tried on three or four pairs. Maybe the electronics salesperson wasn’t trained properly so she didn’t ask the right questions. Perhaps the eye doctor was having a bad day. No matter, everyone loses when mistakes are made. Consumers get frustrated, stores and service providers lose money on refunds and re-doing work, and everyone loses the most irreplaceable commodity of all: time.

Fortunately, there’s something you can do to avoid mistakes and actually increase the odds of having things done right the first time: Choose Diamond Certified service providers that emphasize quality and consistency. And oh, what a gift that is!

Safer Strollers Coming Next Year

2015 will see new safety standards for strollers.

Parents will be happy to know that as of 2015, strollers will have to meet tougher safety standards issued by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Some experts estimate that nearly 16,000 emergency room visits every year are related to stroller accidents. Problems include parking brakes that fail; wheels that seize up; hinges that cause pinches, cuts or amputations; and strangulation hazards. Manufacturers will now have to implement new tests to make sure their strollers meet the mandatory standards.

If you’re going to use a stroller in the meantime, make sure your baby is always buckled up and keep their hands away from the stroller when it’s collapsed. Don’t forget to firmly latch the brakes, and if the stroller is used in a reclined position, close the leg openings so your baby can’t slip through. Finally, don’t overload the stroller with packages or diaper bags—it could tip over.

Re: S.Q. Garage Door

We had our garage doors adjusted and a new motor installed, and the service could not have been better. The unit was excellent, and the staff was knowledgeable, thorough, and friendly. Hats off to all!

Thanks,
A.H.
