The Highest Praise

Creative Roofing of Northern Calif photo
A recent project by Creative Roofing of Northern California, a Diamond Certified company.

Every month, satisfied customers send letters of appreciation to Diamond Certified companies and we share some of them in this newsletter. Sometimes I can’t resist highlighting one of these complimentary letters because it describes so well what it means to provide high quality and great service. Here are some excerpts from a consumer who wanted to sing the praises of Creative Roofing of Northern California for its outstanding performance from start to finish.*

“Creative Roofing was very courteous and professional, from my first contact with Angela (the office manager) throughout the entire office and guys in the field. My calls and questions were addressed promptly and directly.

The quote was competitive and a very good learning experience for me…I was pleased with the thoroughness of the quote and contract processes. The process ensured that the needs and rights of both Creative Roofing and the customer were taken care of and that there would be no surprises.

The roofers started work on time…they were all very friendly and courteous. Miguel kept me apprised of the progress each day. He laid out the options very clearly, from “doing nothing” to stages toward “a complete repair.” I must add that Miguel’s carpentry repairs to the chimney and siding were expertly done and minimized waste. The crew cleaned up the entire area perfectly each and every day.

The operations manager was very attentive and kept me informed on the project status as it was nearing completion. Kelly, the general manager, was also very open, helpful and flexible in the closing details of the project.

A roofing project has the potential to produce a lot of anxiety and negative stress. This was a very positive experience for me and I will definitely be a return customer as long as the current staff and crew are there. At every level, the entire organization delivered the highest level of quality and service I could have hoped for.”

To deliver on all these things takes an organizational commitment to top quality service, and that’s what you want to look for the next time you hire a company. When you choose a Diamond Certified company, you have the added assurance of statistically reliable research derived from a large, random sample of the company’s verified customer base. That means dissatisfied and satisfied customers are surveyed in true proportion to their occurrence, which isn’t the case with most online review sites.

Ask Chris

Make sure you do your homework before purchasing “car repair” insurance.

Dear Chris,
I have an option to buy “car repair” insurance for a 2008 used domestic car, which I bought in January. It was previously a rental car. Have you heard of this insurance? Is it worth getting? –A.H.

Dear A.H.,
“Car repair” insurance sounds like what we used to call an extended warranty. It’s a little-known insurance product that insures you for mechanical breakdowns. If you buy it, you should look carefully at what’s excluded from the coverage—that’s where the pitfalls are for extended warranties. For example, parts might be covered but not labor, which is the most expensive part of a repair bill.

How much is the annual premium, and what have you spent on extra repairs so far? Also, do you know the repair history for your make and model? Consumer Reports magazine has that type of information online for a small subscription fee. Have you checked online for complaints about that model or contacted the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for information on recalls for that vehicle? These are some ways to determine the likelihood of your car having a mechanical breakdown.

Some consumer advocates recommend against buying this type of insurance and say you’re better off setting aside a little money every month in an auto repair fund. This article from bankrate.com suggests that if you want to buy the insurance, you should go through your auto insurance company rather than a car dealer—it’s likely that the premium will be lower.

Good luck,
Chris
