Never underestimate the power of the human connection in business. Recently, I was eating at a fast food restaurant, which might be the last place you’d expect a sincere interaction. When I couldn’t finish my meal and needed a to-go container, I approached the young woman at the counter, made my request, and then thanked her for her help. She looked me in the eye and responded with a very sincere, “It’s my pleasure.” What a surprising and refreshing encounter! When I returned to the restaurant, the same thing happened with other employees. It never sounded canned or forced, and it gave me the impression that this chain hires motivated people and trains them well.

I’m always on the lookout for clues that a company makes customer satisfaction a true priority. Whenever I’m buying a product or service, I’m sizing up the experience as well. I tune in to the typical things like a store’s cleanliness and how helpful and knowledgeable the employees are, but I’m also looking for signs of extra effort and a commitment to serve, along with a real connection to the customer. In my example, that “something extra” is the employees’ attitudes and efforts to make a connection with a smile, eye contact and some kind words.

The other day, I was providing a service to someone. When she thanked me for helping her, I knew just what to say. I spontaneously responded, “It’s my pleasure.” And it actually was.

If you’re planning to take your fitness to another level in 2013, working with a personal trainer can make a huge difference. Diamond Certified experts suggest working with a certified, experienced personal trainer to help you reach all your health and fitness goals.

Look for a trainer who establishes good rapport and can motivate you—these two elements are critical for developing a successful, long-term relationship. Expect the personal trainer to ask you about your short and long-term goals, your past exercise regimen, and some aspects of your nutrition. Be sure to inform the trainer about your previous injuries and medical history. Once you start your workout, the trainer should demonstrate proper technique and exercises that will help you reach your goals.
