Give Generously and Wisely

If your mailbox looks anything like mine right now, you’re getting a barrage of requests for charitable donations. Every cause imaginable steps up their giving campaigns this time of year because they know how generous Americans are. About 70 to 80 percent of us give to at least one charity a year, and everybody wants a piece of that pie.

I’ve changed my own giving strategy over the years. I used to give small amounts to lots of different charities and nonprofit groups. Now, I give larger donations to a few favorites that I know a lot about, and throughout the year, I give smaller donations to support charities that my friends and family are involved with and recommend.

If you know absolutely nothing about an organization (and even if you know a little), take some time to check it out. It’s easy to do through three groups that evaluate charities: Charity Navigator, the Wise Giving Alliance of the Better Business Bureau and the American Institute of Philanthropy. I think you’ll be surprised at how much some charities spend on marketing and administration, and how little gets to those in need.

On the other hand, you’ll also find reports on charities that are highly rated as “Top-Notch Charities” for their excellence in financial management, accountability and transparency, and results. I was pleased to see the Bay Area Food Bank and the San Francisco Food Bank on Charity Navigator’s list.

Happy Giving and Happy Holidays!

Holiday Hazards for Your Pets

Veterinarians and animal poison control centers stay busy with all kinds of emergencies this time of year. For example, pets can get hurt by gnawing on electrical cords or swallowing batteries, and they can cut themselves on broken glass ornaments. Even ribbon and tinsel, if ingested, can damage a dog’s or cat’s intestines and cause an obstruction. Another hazard is Christmas tree water—according to the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center, it contains fertilizers and bacteria, which can cause an upset stomach. No one wants to deal with a sick pet in the middle of a holiday party.

Animals should be kept away from mistletoe, lilies, holly and poinsettias, because those plants can cause vomiting, diarrhea and/or kidney failure. Don’t let your pets ingest fatty foods like turkey skin, chocolate, yeast dough or coffee. If you need a 24-hour emergency animal poison control hotline, call 1(888) 426-4435.

Subject: Zeus Remodeling

Dear Diamond Certified,

I found Zeus Remodeling through Diamond Certified when I was looking to have my two bathrooms remodeled. They were incredible in all ways. Their work was very high quality. They were 100 percent honest and so were all the employees and subcontractors who came into the house. The work was done on time, as they were extremely dependable. In addition, they worked within the budget that was set at the beginning of the project and I believe they were very fair in their pricing. They were wonderful about giving ideas when I wasn’t sure what to choose.

I was so happy with their work that I immediately hired them again to remodel the rest of my condo, including the bedroom, office, living room, dining room, hallways and both balconies. I had remodeled my kitchen the year before with someone else but I had Zeus Remodeling put in additional work. Again, I was thrilled with everything that was done and they made it as comfortable as possible throughout the entire process.

My house is totally remodeled now, but I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to all my family and friends. The two owners, Paul and Dima, as well as all the people associated with them were outstanding in every way. I feel that I was very lucky to find them. You won’t be sorry if you choose Zeus Remodeling. I know I’m not.
