Q: What should I look for in a roofing contractor?
A: "A lot of basic questions are answered by Diamond Certified’s website. Its screening process only allows the very best firms through. On our website, we also provide a comprehensive list of questions—drawn up by the National Roofing Contractors Association—that you should ask of any contractor. It covers basic questions about licenses and insurance and gives tips on what to look for in a proposal."
Q: Will I have the same foreman throughout my project?
A: "Yes. We hold a pre-construction meeting and our estimator will introduce you to the foreman, supervisor and safety coordinator. That team will stay in place throughout your project. We’ll give you the foreman’s cell phone number and encourage you to call him whenever you have a question or concern."
Q: What’s Duro-Last roofing?
A: "Duro-Last is a prefabricated, reinforced, thermoplastic membrane roofing material designed for flat or low-sloped roofs—primarily commercial and industrial buildings. It’s durable; easy to install; leak-proof; resistant to chemicals, fire and high winds; and virtually maintenance-free. More than one billion square feet of Duro-Last membrane have been installed throughout North America since 1978."
Q: How much roof area do I need for a solar system?
A: "You need about 100 square feet of surface area per kilowatt of generating capacity (one kilowatt is generally the smallest we install). A typical home system of four kilowatts would require 400 square feet of roof area with good southern exposure. How much power you need will depend on your particular energy requirements."
Q: What kinds of rebates are available for solar panels?
A: "The state of California provides a $2,500 cash rebate for each kilowatt—that’s $10,000 for a typical four-kilowatt system. There’s also a federal tax credit of $2,000 for home solar systems."
