Chris Brown (L) and Dan Ross supervise all Ross Painting’s jobs.
Q: Do you offer free estimates?
A: "We don’t typically charge for estimates, but our cost to prepare and deliver a proposal is about $200."
Q: Can you give me an estimate over the phone?
A: "No. We provide our clients with a detailed work scope that reflects our understanding of what they want and a detailed description of what’s needed to provide the desired results. You might be able to describe how large your home or room is, but there are numerous variables that determine what work will be required and how long it will take to complete. We strive to do our projects the right way, and that starts with a good estimate."
Q: How soon will I receive my proposal?
A: "If you have an urgent need, we’ll try our best to accommodate, but a typical proposal takes between two days and one week. When you call and ask for an estimate, we’re already committing time, and after meeting with you it usually takes a few days before we can sit down and work on your proposal."
Q: Can you handle projects of all sizes?
A: "We won’t take a job if we know it’s too big, but in general, we can handle home projects of any size."
Q: Do you have insurance?
A: "We’ve always met or exceeded insurance requirements for our projects. We carry workers’ compensation, general liability, auto and pollution insurance, and we can supply insurance certificates if asked."
Q: What kind of experience do you have?
A: "Our owner, Dan Ross, has been in the industry since 1972 and has experience in all phases of commercial and residential painting. We invest in our employees by sending them to continual training classes. We’re an accredited Painting and Decorating Contractors of America (PDCA) painting company—the only one in Northern California—and we invest in continued education to maintain the accreditation."
Q: How do you manage your jobs?
A: "Every job has a foreman who’s the point of contact. Additionally, we have a field superintendent who’s directly in charge of all the foremen—he sets up the job, stops by on a regular basis to make sure the project is running properly, and assists with technical issues. If there are any problems, the field superintendent becomes involved until the project is on course and running smoothly. Each team has an experienced painter as a driver/delivery person to keep foremen on the job and out of the paint store. We also have an office manager and part-time office assistant to make sure calls are answered and paperwork flows efficiently."
Q: What’s your crew size?
A: "Crew sizes vary depending on the size of the project, deadline requirements and work to perform for that day or week. They range from as small as two to as large as 15 painters."
Q: How long will it take you to submit a proposal?
A: "It depends on the size of the project and how complete the bid information and instructions are. Typically, small to medium project proposals take two to seven business days to prepare. Large projects take eight to 15 days."
Q: Do you provide a warranty?
A: "Yes. Warranties are typically job-specific, depending on the manufacturer, surfaces and conditions. We offer a one-year warranty on labor and materials, but we’ll inspect any problems that occur outside the warranty to determine if our workmanship is the cause. It’s a good idea for property owners to inspect completed projects within the first year and address any problems early; it can prevent larger, obvious problems from showing up in the future."
