Q: What are the benefits of natural light?
A: "Natural light is the most environmentally friendly way to illuminate a building. It saves on energy costs by using the sun’s light, and it can be very aesthetically pleasing and make a room feel bigger. It also has a positive effect on people within a building. Natural light has been known to have a positive effect on a person’s mood, and light therapy is a treatment for depression. A New England Journal of Medicine study has shown that students who live and study in natural light have higher test scores, and Wal-Mart did a study that showed a workplace with natural light had more productive workers and customers who purchased more merchandise."
Q: Do you make your own skylights?
A: "We used to, but we sold our manufacturing arm to Velux, the largest manufacturer of skylights in the world. We now exclusively sell Velux skylights and Sun Tunnels. However, we still manufacture the Fan-Attic."
Q: What’s a Sun Tunnel?
A: "A Sun Tunnel is a flexible tube that bends light from an attic skylight around obstructions and brings it to hard-to-reach areas like closets, second bathrooms and laundry rooms. It also has an optional light kit to work as a lighting fixture after dark. There’s also a rigid version of the Sun Tunnel, which we often recommend for installation on northern and eastern exposures."
Q: How long does it take to install a Sun Tunnel?
A: "It depends on the type of roof. One of our experienced professionals can usually install a Sun Tunnel in about one hour on a standard composition roof. Installing one on a tiled roof takes a bit longer."
Q: Can your skylights and Sun Tunnels be installed on any roof?
A: "Yes. We’re one of the few companies that offer solutions for all roofs."
Q: What’s a Fan-Attic and what does it do?
A: "The Fan-Attic is a solar powered attic ventilation system. As an ‘active’ attic ventilation system, the Fan-Attic provides more effective ventilation than ‘passive’ systems, such as turbine vents. Since the Fan-Attic is solar powered, there are no wires to attach and no electricity is required to run it."
Q: Why is attic ventilation important?
A: "Heat and moisture affect your roofing materials all year. In summer, built-up attic heat migrates into your living area, heats up the air in your air conditioning ducts, and makes the air conditioner work harder to cool your home. Adding a Fan-Attic solar ventilation system to your roof reduces the operating time of your air-conditioner, saves on power use and helps the environment. In winter, moisture from inside the house can enter the attic. Without proper ventilation, excess moisture promotes mold and mildew, can saturate insulation, and can freeze on the underside of your roofing material. A Fan-Attic ventilates this air before it has a chance to condense inside your attic, extending the life of your roof."
Q: Is the Fan-Attic difficult to install?
A: "A skilled professional can install the Fan-Attic on an asphalt composition roof in about 30 minutes. For other roofs, we highly recommend you hire a qualified Fan-Attic dealer or roofing professional."
Q: Does the Fan-Attic make a lot of noise?
A: "The Fan-Attic is extremely quiet. The solar cell provides power to a DC motor without the humming sound associated with AC motors, which are used on electric attic fans."
Q: What’s the life expectancy of the Fan-Attic’s solar panel?
A: "Every Fan-Attic features a state-of-the-art solar panel and is designed to last for more than 20 years. It’s backed by a 20-year limited warranty—one of the strongest in the industry."
Q: Is a building permit required to install the Fan-Attic?
A: "Not usually, but you should check with your local building codes just in case."
Q: Is additional wiring required?
A: "No. The Fan-Attic works right out of the box."
Q: Can the black fan housing be painted to match the roof shingles?
A: "Yes. We recommend you prime the housing with an acrylic paint. Don’t apply any paint to the solar panel."
Q: Can I replace my existing static or turbine vents with the Fan-Attic?
A: "Yes. In most cases, the Fan-Attic will easily and directly replace existing vents with little or no additional roof cutting."
Q: Will the Fan-Attic run after dark?
A: "The Fan-Attic doesn’t run after the sun goes down, but since it’s already cooled your attic during the daylight hours, the residual cooling effect lasts well into the evening."
