HouseWorks, Inc. Frequently Asked Questions

(415) 578-9560
375 Alabama St., Suite 360
San Francisco, CA 94110
Q: Are you licensed and insured?
A: "The California Contractors State Licensing Board as a corporation licenses us. We carry workers’ compensation insurance, general liability insurance and automobile insurance. We also make sure all our trade contractors are fully insured."
Q: How do I get an estimate for my project?
A: "After an initial telephone conversation, we make an appointment for an estimator to view your project. At that meeting, we conduct a walkthrough and thoroughly discuss the full scope of work, including your goals and expectations. We may ask to have our subcontractors view your job as well. We don’t charge for these initial meetings. You’ll subsequently receive a cost estimate, either by email or in person."
Q: What makes your estimates different?
A: "Most homeowners have heard stories about the $250,000 remodel that ultimately cost $500,000. We pride ourselves on providing thorough, clear, honest estimates. We incorporate best building practices into our planning and strive to include every known facet of a project. Circumstances that can’t be assessed until a project is underway, like mold or dry rot, are clearly noted."
Q: Will HouseWorks give me the best price?
A: "HouseWorks may not give you the lowest price, but we’ll certainly give you excellent value. Our service, attention to detail and excellent customer communication will help you realize the highest degree of long-term satisfaction for your remodeling project."
Q: Will there be any change requests on my job?
A: "Sometimes change requests are needed for unforeseen conditions. These typically represent items such as dry rot damage, code violations that are encountered in the course of construction, or other conditions that may not be visible until demolition begins. In addition, clients will often request additional work. We never begin work on a change request until it’s been explained to and authorized by our clients."
Q: What is Design/Build?
A: "Regardless of scope, we can provide the design, architectural and engineering services to bring your most abstract ideas from dream to reality. Some projects are designed in-house. For larger or more complicated projects, we collaborate with a small and carefully cultivated team of architects and engineers. In all situations, we’ll meet to discuss your lifestyle design goals, develop plans, and help you choose materials, appliances and design details. We can then successfully move to the construction phase of your project."
Q: What if I have my own architect?
A: "HouseWorks is happy to work with your design professional. Through careful collaboration, we can implement their plans and often add additional insight before construction begins."
Q: Does HouseWorks do minor repair work?
A: "We’ve found it best to concentrate on our remodeling jobs and recommend a handyman service for repairs. But if we’re currently working on your jobsite, we’re happy to assist with minor repairs."
Q: Do you use subcontractors?
A: "We periodically use subcontractors for specialty trades, such as electrical and plumbing. We work with companies that we’ve known and used for several years and have proven to be both competent and engage in practices that are consistent with our philosophy of serving clients. And all our subcontractors are licensed and insured."
Q: Who will manage my job?
A: "An experienced project manager will closely supervise your project. Your project manager will ensure the highest production quality and schedule management. You’ll receive ongoing updates on the progress of your work and any choices that need to be made in the course of construction. The project manager is supported by our talented office staff at all times."
Q: How does HouseWorks invoice for services?
A: "10 percent of the total job cost is collected upon signing the contract (up to a state allowable maximum of $1,000). Once the job has started, we bill weekly, based on the percent of your job that’s been completed."
Q: Are customer references available?
A: "We have references available for qualified customers. If you'd like to see some of our projects, we can arrange a visit."
