Q: Do you only install Lennox systems?
A: "No. Lennox is our premier brand, but we install a variety of brands, including Trane and Carrier. We’ll install the system that’s right for you, not the one that’s best for us. There are a few brands we don’t use because of quality issues, but that still leaves a large number from which to choose."
Q: How can I increase the efficiency of my home’s heating and cooling system?
A: "There are several ways, but the easiest is usually to improve the duct system. PG&E estimates up to 30 percent of your energy can be lost in a duct system. It’s not only the system you buy; it's also what that system is pushing the air through. Running a new system with faulty duct work is like buying a brand new car and putting bald tires on it. We analyze the duct system as well as the heating and air conditioning equipment to make sure the entire system is operating efficiently."
Q: Should I have my ducts cleaned?
A: "In our experience, duct cleaning is a poor solution for improving indoor air quality. It does have some effect, but the majority of air duct cleaning companies don’t hire skilled employees, so the end result is often more detrimental because it stirs up more dirt after the ducts have been cleaned."
Q: Do electronic air cleaners work?
A: "Depending on the brand, electronic air cleaners can work very well. However, electronic air cleaners are an old technology. Their biggest problem is they produce ozone, which is an unacceptable byproduct. Also, while electronic air cleaners do a fairly good job at high efficiencies when they're clean, their efficiency drops substantially as they collect dirt out of the air. Unless you maintain their cleanliness, their overall performance suffers."
Q: What are media filters? Do they work?
A: "A media filter is a physical filter that catches dirt and particles in the air. Media filters start out at high efficiency and maintain that efficiency throughout their life. We specialize in high-efficiency MERV (media efficiency rating value) 16 filters that are one step below true HEPA filters."
Q: How often do I need to change my filter?
A: "It depends on the type of filter and if you have air conditioning. HEPA filters are changed once every three years. MERV 16 filters are changed once a year, and MERV 8 filters are changed two to three times a year."
Q: What are electrostatic filters?
A: "Electrostatic filters use static electricity to trap particles. We don’t recommend using them, because their efficiency drops as they’re used (much like electronic air cleaners)."
