Q: How do I know how often my gutters need to be serviced or replaced?
A: "The sure sign is when gutters and downspouts are clogged or not operating properly. As a general rule, basic maintenance and service is recommended every six months. During a maintenance call, we clear blockage and debris, adjust attachments, assess if there are any problems that require repair, and find parts that need replacement."
Q: What types of gutter materials are available?
A: "Wood is used in rare instances and is the most expensive. Copper is considered the best looking, has lower maintenance costs and doesn’t rust, but it’s expensive to install. Stainless steel is popular, because it’s rust-free and strong, but it can be more expensive than other options. Vinyl gutters retain their color, remain flexible and are relatively easy to repair or replace. Aluminum is the most popular and is less expensive, but it can rust and have issues with dents."
Q: Should I remove or refresh my gutters when I replace my roof or remodel my house?
A: "If you’ve already installed lifetime seamless gutters, there should be no reason to replace them. If not, we can replace the gutters before, during or after a roofing project. If you’re painting a house, we can discuss replacing the gutters, too. Many times, we’ll do the gutter work before painting, because the downspouts are usually painted along with the body of the house."
Q: What’s the general life span of a gutter?
A: "A painted gutter has a 20-year warranty on fading. Many last for 40-plus years, but that’s not guaranteed. Unpainted gutters (bonderized or galvanized) can be expected to last 15 to 25 years. Copper and stainless steel systems should last a lifetime."
