Cellular Window Coverings: Energy Efficient and Easy to Use

More Savvy Tips

You can save energy in your home by installing cellular (also known as honeycomb) shades. They’re made in single, double and even triple cells. One homeowner with a 3,000-square-foot home reported to Duane Vos, CEO of Creative Window Fashions, Inc. a Diamond Certified company, that his energy bill was reduced by 13 percent after installing cellular shades. A business owner whose office was too hot with just mini-blinds was able to lower the inside temperature 15 degrees by doing the same thing. Employees were more comfortable and the energy bill was lower, too.

You might think cellular shades collect lots of dust within their cells and are difficult to clean. Not so, says Mr. Vos. Most are made of polyester and clean up easily with an electrostatic feather duster. You can also try canned compressed air, the same product used to clean your computer’s keyboard. For really dingy shades, try professional ultrasonic dry cleaning.
