Few landscape contractors earn the prestigious Diamond Certified award, which means they’ve been independently rated Highest in Quality. Even fewer can claim an owner with almost 50 years of combined experience in the landscaping and general construction industries, but that’s exactly the case for Mervyn Salt Landscapes. “I eat, drink and sleep landscaping,” affirms owner Mervyn Salt. “My construction background gives me a real advantage when it comes to creating unique landscapes and gardens. Also, since I’m from England, I’m able to bring the European tradition of fine gardens to each project.”
Mervyn Salt Landscapes has been offering comprehensive design/build landscaping services to residential clients throughout the South Bay since 1979, handling everything from project planning and construction to custom planting, irrigation and lighting. The company’s full-service design/build capabilities allow it to perform all associated work on its landscaping projects, including carpentry, plumbing/irrigation, painting, drainage and masonry. “With the exception of large paving jobs, we do everything ourselves,” explains Mr. Salt. “We manage our clients’ landscaping projects from concept to completion.”
Unlike landscaping companies whose work is reliant on traditional products and old-style techniques, Mervyn Salt Landscapes takes pride in always staying current with the landscaping industry’s most recent trends and technology. “For example, we always use organic humus for soil conditioning,” says Mr. Salt. “Some firms use mushroom compost, but we use Organic Super Humus, which consists of recycled leaves, old grass and chipped tree branches. Everything we do is geared toward sustainability.” In addition to its Green business practices, the company brings fresh materials to the jobsite every day and thoroughly sweeps and pressure washes every surface before leaving.
Another distinctive feature of Mervyn Salt Landscapes is Mr. Salt’s dedication to quality control—an all-inclusive business approach to which he attributes the company’s long-term success. “I visit each jobsite two or three times a day,” he says. “In addition, we only take on one job at a time, so we’re onsite until the work is completely finished. After the job is done, I periodically visit to ensure the plants are doing well and the systems are working properly. It’s all part of providing the best possible landscaping experiences for our clients.”
