Few companies in the construction field earn the prestigious Diamond Certified award, which means they’ve been independently rated Highest in Quality. Even fewer are owned by an industry veteran with more than three decades of experience, but that’s exactly the case for Matoza Construction. “I began in the construction business when I was 16 years old,” explains co-owner Henry Matoza. “I founded this company in 1984 to provide design/build services for a full range of construction projects, from residential remodels and additions to commercial building improvements.”
Unlike other construction firms that only focus on the building aspects of their customers’ projects, Matoza Construction works closely with its clients to create unique designs before it proceeds with the building process. “Often, when I first meet with clients, they only have vague ideas of what they want,” says co-owner Penelope Smith, who brought 12 years of entrepreneurial and construction design experience to the company when she joined in 1998. “In those cases, we do some design work at no cost to define their ideas, and we can even bring an architect or engineer on board if necessary. Once the plans are confirmed, we create detailed contracts that clearly define all the work to be done.”
To add to its full-service business approach, Matoza Construction also provides buying services for its clients—an uncommon industry practice that ensures customers obtain the correct materials for their specific projects. “Most contractors just send their clients to the store with a list of things to buy, but I’ll go with them and make sure they’re getting the right materials,” says Ms. Smith. “For example, I’ll go through every granite slab at the supplier until I find the perfect one for a certain countertop. We help our clients take on aspects that are intimidating to those unfamiliar with construction.”
Some construction companies hire day laborers or inexperienced workers to fill in their work crews, but Matoza Construction’s crew members are all full-time employees who’ve been with the firm for years. “Our employees exhibit extraordinary levels of craftsmanship,” says Mr. Matoza. “They’re cross-trained in numerous trades, so we can often eliminate the need for subcontractors.” Most crews consist of two to three journeyman tradesmen and a laborer, so clients are assured their work will be performed by highly-skilled craftsmen.
