Draperies by Susan provides custom window coverings and fabrics.

With the name “Draperies by Susan,” it might come as a surprise that the Emeryville-based window coverings company isn’t run by a Susan at all. Founded in 1969 (by its namesake), Draperies by Susan was sold to certified interior designer and long-time associate Chun Wong in 1985, and continues under her expert guidance today.

The company has made its name providing custom window coverings, but it also does furniture reupholstery, slip covers, window seats, throw pillows and bed spreads—all custom-made to customers’ exact specifications. Ms. Wong also offers free in-home consultations, so customers can see the range of her company’s services and plan every aspect of their perfect room in the comfort of their own home. “Even though we specialize in window coverings, we see the whole picture,” says Ms. Wong.

Draperies by Susan’s designers, many of whom have more than 20 years of industry experience, make it a point to keep current on the ever-evolving world of window covering fashion. “We stay on top of the trends and attend several trade shows every year,” says Ms. Wong. “We need to have product knowledge about the newest things that come out.” This attention to contemporary style gives customers countless options when furnishing their rooms.

Draperies by Susan is a Hunter Douglas Showcase Priority Dealer, which gives it exclusive rights to display products from what’s widely considered one of the top window treatment brands in the world, including the prestigious Alustra Collection. “Our favorite brand is definitely Hunter Douglas,” Ms. Wong confirms. “We carry their entire line of products. We also have a large variety of other products, and if we don’t have something in our showroom, we can probably get it from a design center.”

For customers skeptical about needing a professional to install window coverings, Ms. Wong cautions that it may seem fairly straightforward, but there are variables involved that should be left to an industry expert. She also cautions against hiring non-certified designers. “There are subtle differences between substandard and quality workmanship, but a lot of people may not know what to look for,” she says. “They don’t know that seams should be hidden or hems should be doubled. And there are varying qualities in custom work that non-professionals probably can’t identify.”
