For Steve and Paul Woerner, father and son owners of Clayton Valley Hardwood Floor Company, their company’s focus on quality craftsmanship, scheduling and consideration for customers differentiates it from its competition.
“We install floors the way they should be installed, so they look right and hold up down the road,” says Steve Woerner. “We don’t leave any loose ends, and we complete everything down to the last trim piece.” That also means recommending the best materials to achieve the look a customer wants. “For example, we don’t like to do bamboo floors,” he says. “Bamboo looks great when first installed, but it scratches easily and doesn’t hold up well. In the long run, most customers will be happier with a different material.”
Scheduling is another important aspect of Clayton Valley Hardwood Floor Company’s operation. “When someone’s having floor work done, their house is upside down,” says Mr. Woerner. “Often, during the finishing process, they can’t even get into their house. We make sure we’re always on schedule, so jobs are done correctly and on time.” If that means working a longer day to keep on schedule, the Woerners will do it. “We even help move furniture if necessary—whatever it takes.”
A clean workspace is also vital to the company. Not only is it a courtesy to homeowners, says Mr. Woerner, but many finishing materials are flammable, and if they’re not removed at the end of each workday, they can create a fire hazard. In addition to cleaning up, the Clayton Valley Hardwood team makes extensive use of dust curtains and masking to keep sanding dust from infiltrating the rest of a house.
Clayton Valley Hardwood Flooring Company does nothing without consulting the homeowner. “We involve our customers in all decisions that affect the look and durability of their floor,” says Mr. Woerner. “We want to be on the same page with them, so they’re satisfied when the job is complete.”
