If you plan to install or replace window coverings in your home, make sure to hire a company that’s licensed and bonded, recommends Dustin Yocum of World Class Window Coverings.
“Also, be careful of vendors who only carry one product line from a single manufacturer,” says Mr. Yocum. “With a vendor who sells only one line, you won’t get the choices you need to make the best decision.”
Remember, window coverings and treatments are just as important as the windows themselves. They moderate light and temperature, control privacy, insulate noise and accentuate your view.
If you want as much light as possible, choose window coverings that can be parted or opened completely. Sheers, laces and casement fabrics can filter the sun’s rays. In some rooms—bathrooms particularly—you might opt for curtains, draperies and shades lined with blackout linings. Translucent sheers and lightweight fabrics can let in some light during the day while providing privacy. Heavy draperies and shades also absorb noise, muffling sounds that would otherwise echo off bare windows.
If you have a great view from your windows, choose fabrics that repeat the color and patterns on the wall so your eyes won’t be as distracted from the view. Conversely, select bold colors and patterns to draw the eye away from an undesirable view—or block it completely with sheer or semi-sheer fabrics.
