Consider the following when looking for a professional roofing contractor.

Beyond having the experience and knowledge for a project, only consider professional roofing contractors that can verify the following basics:

• Evidence of a contractor’s license for roofing (C-39) issued through the Contractors State License Board of California (www.cslb.ca.gov). A C-43 or C-51 license is required for installation of metal roofing only.
• An established, permanent place of business and office telephone number
• A tax identification number
• A local business license, if required
• Proof of workers’ compensation and liability insurance
• Worker education and safety training programs

Research as much as you can about potential contractors through personal and customer references, other contractors, and local trade associations such as the Associated Roofing Contractors of the Bay Area Counties. Ask for a formal written proposal that defines what work is to be completed and when, the costs to be charged for materials and labor, and the terms of any warranties.

“It’s important to find a contractor that has a history,” says Javier Martinez, owner of Winter Roofing, Inc. in San Jose. “I get calls from customers who’ve hired a new contractor to save money, only to have a problem come up and find the contractor has disappeared. Also, make sure the contractor has the proper license for the type of work they’re doing.”
