Regular medical check-ups aren’t just for people.

When it comes to caring for your pet, Dr. George Walters, owner of Northbay Animal Hospital in San Rafael, recommends having it examined twice a year. Dr. Walters says a pet’s life can be extended up to five years by simply keeping its teeth clean and managing its weight. “Brushing the teeth and implementing a proper diet are key factors in keeping your pet healthy. People love their pets and want to give them treats all the time, but the best way to love them is to keep them on sensible diets.”

If you have a dog, it’s important to make sure it doesn’t swallow any foreign objects. “Dogs are attracted to all sorts of things that block their digestive systems, like greasy rags,” says Dr. Walters. “Sometimes, even dog toys can be a problem. Make sure you clean up after yourself so there’s nothing tempting left behind.” Keep the following toxins out of your dog’s reach:

• Antifreeze
• Rat poison and snail bait (even if hidden under plants in the yard)
• Insecticides
• Petroleum products
• Household cleaners
• Prescription medicines
• Onions, chocolate (especially baker’s or unsweetened), moldy walnuts or dairy products, and grapes and raisins

If you have a cat, scheduling regular physical examinations can help detect and prevent health problems early. Standard cat exam topics include parasite control, nutrition and dental care. Outside of regularly scheduled veterinary visits, you should immediately call your clinic if you notice the following signs:

• Unusual behavior, including aggression or lethargy
• Unusual discharge from the nose, eyes or other body openings
• An increase or decrease in appetite that lasts more than a few days
• Excessive head shaking, scratching or licking
• Swelling or abnormal lumps
• Limping or difficulty getting up or lying down
• Foul breath or excessive deposits on teeth
• Changes in urination or drinking habits

Dr. Walters also recommends obtaining pet health insurance, which can save a lot of money on veterinary bills, especially in the case of emergencies. The insurance is especially inexpensive if purchased when your pet is young and maintained throughout its life.
