Energy efficiency isn’t just a feature of household appliances—more and more roofing companies are offering roofing options that help homeowners save money on energy bills, increase year-round comfort and lessen their overall impact on the environment. “Energy conservation is a very important issue to consumers and roofing companies alike,” confirms Ray Tom, operations manager at Henris Roofing Co. in Petaluma. “Today’s homeowners want more efficient roofs, so manufacturers have to come up with new products that are rated by third-party agencies for energy efficiency and reflectivity.”
One of the most popular energy-efficient roofing products is the “cool roof.” Usually white or another light color, cool roofs are made of materials that reflect the sun’s rays and lower surface temperature by up to 100 degrees. Homes absorb heat through their roofs, so cool roofs keep home temperatures cooler and reduce the need for air conditioning, which can reduce peak cooling demand and save on energy costs.
Other popular energy-efficient roofing options include recycled shingles, wood shingles, reclaimed wood shake, metal, rubber, and slate and clay tile. “Green roofs” are even available in some locations—they’re specially made with a water-proof membrane that allows plant material and grasses to grow on top, which reduces water run-off, lowers cooling costs and reduces heat in the air through evapotranspiration.
In order to encourage homeowners to factor energy savings into their roofing decisions, the State of California and the federal government offer rebates when you purchase certain types of roofs. Good roofing contractors can help you wade through these rebates and recent government mandates for new roofing installations. “Make sure your contractor points out these mandates, gives you information and provides samples of products that meet California energy requirements,” advises Mr. Tom.
