Auto mechanics should be open to answering any questions you have.

Look for someone with honesty and integrity. “If they’re not willing to field questions and answer them in an open and respectful manner, you’re not talking to a professional,” says Paul Vacakis, owner of Germany’s Best, Inc. “If you pose a question to a technician or mechanic and he’s willing to admit he doesn’t know the answer, that’s a strong indication of a trustworthy person.” The best shops are often those in which technicians share information about the cars they’re servicing. Discussing things as a group means everyone is involved, knowledge is gained and skills are sharpened.

If you’re considering a new auto repair shop, consider dropping in for a casual visit to get a sense of the facility’s demeanor. Has the company been in business for a while? Are the technicians certified and/or factory-trained? While you’re there, take a look around. A fairly neat and organized work area can be an indication that your car is being handled with care. “However, if a place is too organized and clean, it may suggest that little or no work is being done,” says Mr. Vacakis.

Look for something in the middle—a place that’s organized but displays obvious signs of work. Take a few moments to get a general feel for the atmosphere. “As a consumer, when I go to a store or facility, if the people are friendly and appear to be enjoying their work, I think that’s a great sign,” says Mr. Vacakis.
