Fortunately, it’s easy to confirm a locksmith’s credentials. The California Department of Consumer Affairs’ website (www.dca.ca.gov) lets people verify the licenses of any locksmith or business in the state. “In the last five years,” says Blaine Lucas, owner of Foothill Locksmiths, Inc. in Hayward, “we’ve had an increase in the number of people coming into the Bay Area and setting up locksmith businesses. They might have a dispatch center, and they may seem very professional and legitimate when you call, but there’s a real possibility that they’re unlicensed and will operate with questionable business practices.”
If the locksmithing job is complex, be sure to get a number of price estimates. However, Mr. Lucas warns that the least expensive quote isn’t always the best deal. He says any properly licensed locksmith will do a good job on a standard, residential security job, but if you’re looking for a high-security application, check the certifications of the individual locksmith. By comparing estimates, you can see if what’s being offered is in line with the price. “What looks like a really good deal can turn into a problem very quickly. Pairing licensing information with price quotes is the best way to protect yourself.”
It’s also best to find a good locksmith before you need one. When you’re locked out of your house or car, you often don’t have the time or resources to check credentials. Find a good, reputable locksmith who offers emergency service and keep the phone number handy. Hide-a-key rocks and other devices are also very useful in case you’re locked out—but be sure they’re placed in a truly inconspicuous place.
There are some simple steps you can take to enhance your security and reduce the cost of hiring a locksmith when you need one. First, don’t keep all your keys on one key ring—only keep the keys you use every day, so there will be fewer locks to replace or rekey if the ring is lost. It’s also a good idea to ask to have the locks changed whenever you move into a new house or apartment. If you run a business or there are a number of people who possess a key to your home, it’s wise to change the locks every few years.
