When you require towing service, you usually need it right away, and there’s little time to research which firm offers the most benefits. Cheri Ellison-Carroll, co-owner of Ellison’s Towing in Mountain View, says it’s important to do some research ahead of time so you know exactly who to call in an emergency. “Look for certifications and ask what services the company tows for, like AAA. Also, find out if it tows for the CHP, local police or emergency services. The police have stringent standards for criminal background checks and regular road tests, so you can be assured of quality work.”
If you’re covered by AAA or another roadside assistance service, you can usually request the towing company that’s dispatched to help you. “Make sure the company you choose is properly equipped to tow your particular vehicle and willing to take it where you need it to go,” says Mrs. Ellison-Carroll.
If your vehicle breaks down while you’re driving it, take the proper steps to ensure your safety:
• Get to the side of the road if possible, turn on your hazard lights and call for help.
• Stay in the vehicle with your seatbelt fastened while waiting for the towing company.
• Don’t open the window for anyone except the tow driver. Most tow drivers will call when they’re on the way.
• Raising the hood is a sign of trouble, so keep it down if the tow truck is on its way. It will only block your view.
• You’ll either have to get a ride to the garage or ride with the tow truck driver, so gather everything you don’t want left in your car and take them with you.
