Start by asking people for referrals, and then find out how long a certain company has been in business. As a general rule, try to choose someone who’s been in business for at least 10 years.
It’s a good idea to visit the facility of a company you’re considering so you can see the equipment they use and get a sense of how they run their operation. “If you go by a facility, you can see the caliber of the people who work there,” says Cal Farnsworth, owner of Earl Farnsworth Express. “Then you can ask yourself if those are the type of people you’d invite into your home to handle your move.”
Before you choose a moving company, be sure to check its endorsements, certifications and affiliations. The company should at least be affiliated with the California Moving and Storage Association (CMSA), a nonprofit trade association that requires each member to be licensed and abide by a code of ethics. CMSA can provide information about qualified movers to help you make an informed decision based on your needs.
One of the biggest mistakes people make when choosing a mover is to consider cost above all else. Some companies can quote a cheaper price, but they may not be as experienced or efficient as other movers. “You’re purchasing a service, not a product,” says Mr. Farnsworth. “At the end of the day, it’s more prudent to hire a mover that’s highly qualified and experienced. When you’re paying to have a move taken care of by efficient people, it’s going to get done in less time, with fewer claims and less damage.”
