When hiring an accountant for your small business, take time to assess more than general qualifications.

Good accountants are crucial for small business owners—if your accounts are in order and you’re up-to-date on payments, it’s easier to concentrate on building your business. Before choosing an accounting, consider the following tips:

Look for experience with small business clients. If your business generates a large amount of transactions (an online shopping service, for example), make sure the accountant has experience dealing with companies in your sector.

Determine fees. Is there a fixed annual or monthly fee to complete all business tax requirements? Do hourly fees apply? Compare the fees of several firms before choosing one.

Develop a good relationship. When you first meet a prospective accountant, you’ll know soon if you see eye-to-eye. It’s important to know your finances are being handled by someone you trust. You should contact at least three accountants and determine which one best meets your requirements.

Consider ancillary services. What other services does the accountant provide? Can they complete your self assessment returns? Do they provide business advice or further information to help grow your business?

Keep in touch. Make sure your accountant stays in constant contact, not just at year’s end.
