When remodeling your kitchen, establish a realistic budget and actively manage it.

Preparing for a kitchen remodeling project is a lot like preparing to buy a car—you may know the style you want, but the options you choose may drive the price higher than you can reasonably afford. To stretch your budget and achieve stylish results at the same time, consider the following tips:

Reuse existing appliances and build your new cabinets around them. This could save anywhere from $1,500 to $5,000. However, be aware that appliances are sensitive to change and may develop problems if they’re moved. If you decide to purchase new appliances, choose energy-conscious models to reduce your utility bills.

Maintain the present location of major fixtures. This includes appliances and utilities relative to the plumbing, gas and electrical outlets. It can even apply to the location of a telephone. Moving plumbing, wiring and jacks can be extremely expensive.

Faucets can be costly. The least expensive style is chrome. Even a high-end chrome faucet costs considerably less than a mid-range brass or porcelain version. A standard two-handle faucet generally costs less than one with a single handle. Faucets and handles are sold separately, so you can choose a chrome faucet with brass or porcelain handles for a different look.

Choose neutral colors for fixtures, appliances and laminates. They’re less expensive initially and won’t look dated when color trends change. White and almond sinks are much cheaper than color varieties, and neutral laminate colors for countertops cost less than custom colors or textures. Use your existing floor covering if it’s still in good condition. If your kitchen has old, vinyl flooring, there may be a hardwood floor underneath that could be sanded and refinished.

Order pre-finished trim instead of painting or staining it onsite. If you’re installing new cabinets, you should also install new wood trim for your crown molding and door casings so they match. Ordering pre-finished trim will reduce labor costs, as will choosing finger-jointed grain over clear vertical grain.
